LOON LIVE : Spring Is Coming

Spring can't come soon enough and this week's LOON LIVE session, which is hosted by Matt Callies of Loon Outfitters, will jump start things with two nifty nymph patterns that you need in your fly boxes with the Free Bird and Down Town Brown. LOON LIVE will start at 6:00 p.m. PST this evening and make sure you've got all your fly tying and tool needs met by visiting the Loon Outdoors website. As I mentioned the other day, I'm super fond of the Rogue Quickdraw Mitten Clamps and Forceps. THROWBACK THURSDAY - THE LADDER DIARIES

With destination fly fishing and media, it seems that there are cycles where all you'll hear, read and see highlights a particular place and then it goes fairly quiet only to refresh sometime later with everyone going back to that place and again talking about it again.  After several years of only it only being a blip on the radar every now and again, Pyramid Lake with it's Lahontan Cutthroat are suddenly all over my social media feeds along with it showing up on various blogs and in videos.Cou...

6 Good Reads

We're on a Spring Break road trip that started in California last Friday, then a drive through Nevada and now in Utah visiting family and putting stamps in the children's National Park Passports.  I'm fitting in some "T.F.M. business" in the backseat of the minivan while the wife is behind the wheel towards Bryce Canyon National Park.  T.F.M. posts first and emails next. "Dad Life" (minus the clunky white New Balance kicks) meets "Hack Blogger Life"...Here's a six pack of internet articles worth...

REMEDY PROVISIONS - New Fish Flag Hats in Stock

I get such a kick out of Nate Karnes of Remedy Provisions and his fish flag designs.  He recently refreshed his line up of Fish Flag Hats and they are available in regular and big noggin to cover head sizes small to extra extra large.  I like a few of them but that Redeye Bass Patch Hat is just too cool. Now through the end of the year, use code "TFM2019" for 10% off your order.  Need more incentive?  Get the matching fish flag decal with a hat purchase and free shipping on orders over $50.Kick...

RIVERSMITH - Crosswaters: The Compound

The folks at Riversmith recently kicked off a shortie film series dubbed Crosswaters and this episode featuring Jacob Shields, owner of The Compound in Sarasota, Florida, is pretty neat.  Fly fishing needs more people who aren't afraid of "doing it wrong".  A surf, skate, paddle and fly shop all under one roof sounds pretty rad and both of our children (who are into all those things) would think it's pretty cool as well.Check out the Riversmith website to check out their River Quiver rod holders...

THE MIDWEST DRIFT - 6 Flies for Spring Bass

It's really feeling like spring around here with warmer days, the dogwoods in full bloom, The Masters going on just up the road in Augusta and our lawn has already gotten a haircut twice so far.  I'm ready to focus on all the different warmwater species that are around us from the family pond to the river and all the little creeks and secret spots in between. This week I was thinking that it would be neat to tap the shoulders of a handful of custom fly tiers around the country to see what fly pat...

SIGHT LINE PROVISIONS - The Cone Denim Project

If you're a regular reader of The Fiberglass Manifesto, then you've likely seen articles that Dave Fason of NanoBox Reef has contributed to on his various travels with a fiberglass fly rod in hand and then also the work he continues to with rod builder Chris Barclay of C. Barclay Fly Rod Co.  Over the past couple of years I've gotten to know him through phone calls, emails and texts and earlier this year I had the opportunity to travel with him to Belize to check out things at South Water Advent...

LOON OUTDOORS - Rogue Quickjaw Mitten Clamps & Forceps

Saturday morning I was scrambling around to get all the gear together that Finn and I would need for our day of playing in the creek.  I guess I'm kind of behind my usual early spring schedule of already having all my warmwater fly boxes, leaders and tippets spools, tools and other miscellaneous things packed up in it's own gear bag waiting for the next trip.  Rummaging through plastic storage boxes and gear bags at 5:00 a.m., before enough coffee, is the recipe for forgetting something you'll n...

SIERRA NETS - The Net Maker & Brook Trout Custom Net

I have long admired the work of Greg Madrigal of Sierra Nets and he recently he released a video which tells the story of how his small shop company came to be that is worth checking out.   Greg's woodworking skills are where function meets high art to create something truly special and one of a kind. To show off some of Greg's recent work, I lifted a few photographs from the Sierra Nets Facebook page of a brook trout themed custom net that is just over the top, which is typical for him and what...

A Little Too Early

As the weekend approached, Finn and I knew that we were on our own all day Saturday as my wife and daughter had obligations at church.  Finn wanted to go fishing and when I gave him the option of spending the day on our family pond or taking a road trip to the "secret creek" that a friend had introduced me to a couple of years ago, he was all in to try something new.I had traded text messages with Jeff of Tribe the week before and he had shared a couple of map pins of where to go so that Finn an...

LOON LIVE: Something for the Trout

I can tell that Loon Outdoors and I are on opposite sides of the country because where they say this week's LOON LIVE fly patterns are "Something for the Trout", instead I'm seeing "Something for Early Season Bluegill".  Nevertheless, these are four solid patterns that every angler should have in their fly box. This week's instructional session will include the Soft Hackle PT, the PT, Frenchie and Carey Special.Sign up on the LOON LIVE web page and be ready at the vise when it starts at 6:00 p....

PANFISH ON THE FLY - How to Tie the Triangle Bug

I have a real soft spot for panfish on the fly (and in the frying pan) and longtime readers might remember the #yearofthebluegill push from several years ago.  Actually that yearlong celebration of all things bluegill was 2013 for anyone that is scratching their head and wondering.  Seems like yesterday.  Or at least the day before yesterday...Over the winter, Bart Lombardo launched the Panfish on the Fly website and almost daily he is updating and tweaking it to cover the bases on all things wa...

Over the weekend I traded emails with Joseph Ballarini, publisher of Tail Fly Fishing Magazine and Strung Magazine, and I was able to talk him into giving the T.F.M. readership full access to all 40 issues of the magazine until April 15th for free.  Pretty sweet deal, eh? HALDIN FLY RODS - Introducing HDT Blanks

Though the new Haldin Fly Rods website won't go live until April 1st, the T.F.M. readership is getting a sneak peek over the weekend on some of the things that rod builder and taper designer, Markus Haldin has been hard at work on to include debuting a new series of HDT Blanks with a range from three weight to eight weight.  These are available in three piece S-Glass blanks and each offered in four translucent colors.I like fiberglass three and five weights (A LOT) but the seven and eight weight...
