Chelsea and Real Madrid target Icardi drops hint over Inter future

Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi last night dropped a hint over his future, suggesting that he is set to remain at the San Siro.

Icardi, who notched 29 goals in Serie A this past season on his way to joint-Capocannoniere honours with Lazio’s Ciro Immobile, is viewed by many as one of the finest centre-forward talents in world football, with his sensational return of 100 goals in 159 league outings for Inter Milan a testament to this widespread opinion.

Unsurprisingly, Icardi’s stellar form since making the move to the San Siro has led to inevitable links with some of European football’s heavyweights, with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG and Chelsea all named as admirers of the South American.

‘Wanted by the three best teams in the world’

Speaking in an interview with Radio Metro back in May in the wake of Icardi being snubbed by Argentina manager Jorge Sampaoli for a place at this summer’s World Cup, the striker’s wife and agent, Wanda Nara, revealed that several ‘big clubs’ were ready to pay the hefty 110 million Euro release clause in his Inter contract:

‘There are some big clubs ready to pay the release clause, which is very high, but considering the figures that are circulating in football right now and the kind of player Mauro is, it’s not even that remarkable.’

‘The release clause is set at €110m, but is limited to only a few weeks in June.’

However, Nara added that Icardi’s priority remains the Nerazzurri, where he recently captained Luciano Spalletti’s men to a 4th-placed Serie A finish and subsequent return to the Champions League:

‘There are many clubs putting pressure on, but his priority is Inter. There will be a meeting with their director of sport and the priority as of today is to stay here.’

‘It irritates me when people underestimate Mauro, as he is wanted by the three best teams in the world.’

‘We’ll see what he does with Inter, the situation is he’ll either sign a renewal or leave, but the priority is to remain here and resolve the issue before we can go on vacation.’

Staying put

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old’s future has been called into question in a major way once again over the last week, amid claims that Real Madrid could target Icardi as one of their replacements for Juventus-bound Cristiano Ronaldo.

But the Nerazzurri star last night took to Instagram to seemingly put the rumours surrounding his immediate future to bed, by posting a photo of himself from the day that he joined Inter, followed by the caption ‘to be continued…’
