Erin Condren Petite Planner Set Up for 2020

Ever since Erin Condren launched the Petite Planner Folio System, I abandoned my Traveler's Notebook as my sketchbook/journal. Her version called to me with her colorful style and larger, not so skinny size. I loved that I could rotate in different colorful journals, notebook and planners.  My Lagoon On the Go Folio Cover was looking dirty and worn out with love from all the places I have taken it. Luckily, thanks to Plan with Laken's video, I had a clue that the Winter Surprise Box was for...

frog's Most Surprising Tech Trend Predictions for 2020

Last week frog dropped its annual Tech Trends report, this time looking at what awaits us in 2020 and where the end of the “twenty-tens” leaves us. There are a number of predictions within the report pointing to both an energetic optimism for future innovations and the darker consequences of our technological triumphs over the past ten years alone. After all, we’ve seen events like the 3D printing revolution that delivered professional quality fabrication to a consumer level at dropping price p...

Cars Must Go

In the US, it is difficult to think of a product that has impacted the past, present, and even the future of our nation more so than the automobile. Unfortunately, climate change looms large in that future. Whereas the US has made some progress in switching to fossil-fuel alternatives in the last decade (though recently that has been stifled by the current administration), progress has been undercut by the fact that the nation continues to put more cars on the road. So much so that in recent yea...

A Nice Package Design Detail in These Alpen Drill Bits

Here's a small package design detail revealing that the designer thought things through: These are from Austrian drill bit manufacturer Alpen Drills. Image credit: xelu The hole in the hang tab has been offset to compensate for the weight of the bits, so it will hang perfectly plumb on a store display.Of course I still wish they weren't encased in single-use plastic, but I guess you can't have everything.

While climate change is on the rise, plenty of designers, inventors, companies and even industrialists are fighting to reverse that. Here are the stories on sustainability that stuck out this year: As so-called "Eco-Friendly, 100% Compostable" takeout containers have been found to contain harmful cancer-linked chemicals, there's actually a massive design opportunity presenting itself.A Japanese consortium produced a concept car to show that they can make interior and exterior automotive panels o...

Creatives generally like to compile image libraries on a particular topic, whether for inspiration, research or just plain ol' obsession. The Spitalfields Life blog compiled a book called "The Cree...

What is Your Design Advice for These Tilted Trashcans Next to Bike Paths?

To make things more convenient for cyclists, in Denmark they have these tilted trash cans next to bike paths:If we zoom in and lighten the photo, we can get a better look at the mounting bracket:I was surprised to see the nut; I'd thought there might be a tool-less locking handle there, so that the city workers could lower the can for emptying, but I suppose there are cost constraints.GIving it further thought, I guess the container can never get truly full. And while this is great UX for cyclis...

Are The Arts In Crisis Or Is This A Great Opportunity?

While some have reacted to this trend with protests of ‘art for art’s sake’, perhaps we should view the increasing focus on the usefulness of the arts as an opportunity. The cultural sector now has the chance to define how it would like to be valued. Perhaps having to prove “relevance” will seem a light touch when compared to metrics like gross value added or wellbeing adjusted life years.  – Arts Professional

Developers Propose £3.5 Billion London-Themed Fantasy Park… In London

Working in partnership with Paramount Pictures, BBC and ITV, on behalf of a Kuwaiti developer, the team have concocted a perfect vision of little Britain that will bring a tear to even the most steely of Corbynite eyes. After being drawn into the great union jack glass tent, visitors will be funnelled into High Street, a place “full of shops and restaurants” – like actual British high streets used to be. Maybe there’ll be an empty library and an interactive food bank experience, too. – The...
