2019's Best of Tools & Hardware Design

You'll find no laser levels and internet-connected "smart" tools here. This section is purely about those who have manipulated metal, plastic and other materials into useful, non-techy hand tools and hardware. This dental industry tool for getting the last drop of product out of a squeeze tube looked so useful, my wife tracked down the source design and bought one. (The one in the link above is $40; the missus found a different version on eBay for $4, marketed to painters.) This tool is freaking ...

This Slanted Toilet Was Designed to Minimize Bathroom Breaks

British startup Standard Toilet is getting dragged on the internet for designing a slanted toilet that makes it uncomfortable to sit for long periods of time. Recently approved by the British Toilet Association, the patented design sits at a downward angle of 13 degrees, just enough to put strain on the leg muscles after about five minutes of sitting. In an interview with Wired, founder Mahabir Gill said the design is meant to cut back on employee downtime in the loo. On their website (which is ...

This Storage Organizing Bin Company Also Makes…Sweatpants Drawstring Re-Threaders?

Schaller Corporation is one of those industrial supply companies that (seemingly) make one thing: Plastic bins, in a million different sizes. In drawers of any size, you can use these bins to organize things to your liking.I find monoproduct companies fascinating, but in fact they make one other object: This Easy Threader for getting the drawstring back into your sweatpants or hoodie after they become separated in the washing machine. My DIY method has always been to Scotch-tape the drawstring to ...

An Animated Crosswalk Sign That Shows You How Fast You Have to Run to Make the Light

In my lifetime, crosswalk signs have evolved from simple text warnings (Walk/Don't Walk), to language-free icons of a white figure in stride vs. an orange halting hand, to a variant of that with a countdown timer. Now, some anonymous signage designer has managed to sneak in a full-blow animation, showing you how fast you need to run to make the light:Image credit: MeepSecurity Amusing, but isn't it overkill, considering there's already a timer? Perhaps there should be a couple of frames after "1...

Here are 10 products Tesla should make with its Cybertruck’s ‘bulletproof’ steel

Perhaps one of the most impressive things to come out of the Cybertruck launch was the steel that Musk decided to use in his pickup truck. The steel formed what was called the truck’s exoskeleton and didn’t rely on an internal chassis for strength. Basically, the steel body was literally the thing holding the truck together. Developed to be used on SpaceX’s rockets, this specially formulated alloy of steel boasts of such high strength, it’s physically impossible to mold/cast/stamp it into the sh...

Vienna Ballet Academy Fires Director Over Abuse Claims

The academy had given its students “insufficient medical and therapeutic care,” a commission set up by the Austrian government, said in a report issued on Tuesday. There also seemed to be “no awareness” that it had a responsibility for its students’ health. The decision to effectively dismiss Simona Noja-Nebyla was announced in a news release on Friday by the company that oversees all of Austria’s federal theaters. – The New York Times

What Classical Music Needs To Do About Climate Change

Welcome work by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Research examines all the areas of impact touring has on the environment and recognises that the issue is complex: it cannot be solved by planting a set number of trees per tour. From audiences travelling to concerts to the power required by the halls, this crisis is the responsibility of all of us. Everyone must be conscious of their behaviour and acknowledge the active part they have to play. Planning permission for all new concert halls,...

“Beetlejuice” Has Been A Hit – What Its Surprise Closing Says About Today’s Broadway

Broadway’s supply and demand for theatres is a far cry from the mid 1980s, when commercial theatre in New York in general seemed like it might be on the ropes. Hamilton, Moulin Rouge!, The Lion King and Wicked all grossed more than $2 million last week, and To Kill a Mockingbird – a play – grossed $700,000 more than Beetlejuice – evidence of how expectations and earnings are being recalibrated. – The Stage

“Cats” Was Bad Theatre, An Even Worse Movie. So Why Does It Endure?

“Theater people resent “Cats” not just because it made Broadway uncool until “Hamilton” finally rescued it from the pop cultural stocks. What really infuriates buffs is that “Cats” ushered in an era of grandiose spectacle, the vacuous parade of shows from the 1980s and early ’90s that made it seem as if a musical had to have a helicopter or a crashing chandelier to be worth the rapidly rising ticket price.” – Los Angeles Times

The Newseum was “prey to the economic and cultural forces that have bedeviled institutions as diverse as symphony orchestras and the electronic media. It had to compete for audience and achieve the right balance between substance and entertainment. Like so many organizations in American society, it struggled to find a compromise between being authoritative and being accessible.” – Washington Post
