A futuristic transparent residential space on the bustling streets of Athens!

314 Architecture Studio recently designed an enthralling architectural project on a bustling street in Athens, Greece or more specifically Spefsipou Street. H1002 or Euphoria Rise stands tall amidst neoclassical buildings originating from the 1870s. It’s a refreshing touch of modernity, and a hint of the future slid in between quintessential structures of the past. However, what makes the building even more intriguing is the usage of frosted glass.H1002 features frosted glass predominantly, crea...

Ford's Prototype Emoji Jacket Aims to Help Cyclists and Drivers "Share the Road"

As part of Ford's "Share the Road" campaign, the Michigan-based automaker's European division is putting forth a new idea for curbing road rage between cyclists and drivers: emojis. They partnered with linguists and industrial designers from Designworks to create a prototype jacket that features an LED mesh panel on the back. Cyclists use a wireless remote mounted on the bike's handlebars to activate the display with turn signals, a hazard sign, or one of three emojis meant to quickly communicat...

In a "Flying Wing" Airplane, Would Passengers Sit Facing Forwards, or at an Angle?

I was just thinking about those "flying wing" airplane concepts like this one, where the plane is shaped like a V because that apparently improves fuel economy, and wondering: If these things go mainstream, what are the interiors going to look like, in terms of seat orientation? In subways, trains and buses you always sit facing forwards, backwards or sideways relative to the direction of travel; in civilian aircraft you always face forwards, as I imagine the thrust of takeoff is less pleasant in...

A Thoughtfully-Designed Litter Box for Cats Finds Kickstarter Success

While most dog owners don't need an elevated pet feeder, everyone who owns an indoor cat needs a litter box. The designers at a Michigan-based pet supply company called Tuft & Paw gambled that cat owners would pay $99 for a designey one--and they were right: The Kickstarter campaign for their Cove design, which sought $10,000 in funding, just passed $140,871.Aside from making their litter box look, I say again, designey, they did address some functional issues that I'm surprised most litter boxe...

The FEND One bicycle helmet folds inwards to make it more portable

An improvement over its initial design (and a subsequent winner of the Red Dot Design Award), the FEND One makes protective gear portable. Discarding the notion that a helmet needs to be a sturdy, stiff, singular form, the FEND One is, in fact, foldable. With two segments on either side that fold inwards, the Fend becomes rather portable, occupying a fraction of the volume it would when opened. Its folded design makes it relatively flat, allowing it to slide easily into messenger bags and back...

Journalism Is Broken. Can It Be Saved?

What has happened in journalism in the twenty-first century is a version, perhaps an extreme one, of what has happened in many fields. A blind faith that market forces and new technologies would always produce a better society has resulted in more inequality, the heedless dismantling of existing arrangements that had real value, and a heightened gap in influence, prosperity, and happiness between the dominant cities and the provinces. – New York Review of Books
