Tim Rice: 'Evita was a bonkers idea'

As the great songwriter prepares to take Jesus Christ Superstar on a 50th birthday tour, he talks about penning hits, his idea for a new musical – and drinking from Lloyd Webber’s Georgian wine glassesTim Rice had a hunch the Oscar was in the bag. After all, he and Elton John had been responsible for three of the five nominations in the best song category. But, as he walked on stage that night in 1995, after Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King won, the tall, slightly awkward-looking...

You've always read books in the comfort of your own home. Though it may not be the full cinematic experience, you can also watch films there, in a pinch. I'M STILL STANDING

I think that's an Elton John song?  I'm still standing.  Well, I am.  But it's been a rough few days this December.  In fact, it's been a rough few months this year, but I won't go into that. Returning from 2 1/2 weeks of vacation and rest/relaxation in Florida, I had a slight cold but, apparently, a whopper of an ear infection.  Thought my head was going to explode on the plane as we landed (both times, since we had a 2-plane trip from Orlando to Cincinnati through Atlanta this time).  Also,...

Kate Bush: Rocket Man (Elton John Cover)

From her upcoming album of B-sides, remixes, rarities and cover versions, The Other Sides & Rocket Man, Kate Bush’s cover of Elton John’s “Rocket Man” is predictably unpredictable. Recorded back in 1991, Bush just released her self-directed video for the song—which is equally charming. The video sees Bush playing the ukulele in space, and conducting meteors as if they were her own orchestra. Unequivocally Kate …

The Resurgence of Retro

Beards are back, music from the 70s and 80s are more popular than ever (case in point, Freddie Mercury and Elton John’s biopics hitting the theaters), and the Swiss watch market is practically booming, despite the popularity of smartwatches. It’s safe to say that ‘retro’ has made a complete comeback.Watch styles come and go, but if there’s a universal standard by which watches are compared and measured, it’s the vintage Swiss timepiece. Nothing has ever been (or can be) better than a good, cla...

Elton John Proves He Can Turn any Text into a Song: Watch Him Improvise with Lines from Henrik Ibsen’s Play, Peer Gynt

I'm not a lyric writer. I get all my inspiration from looking at the written page. - Elton John Inspiration is one thing. Acting on it is another. Sir Elton’s output seems to go beyond his magical combination of talent, work ethic, and training. He claims to have taken all of 30 minutes to complete "Your Song." In his 2005 appearance on Inside the Actor's Studio, excerpted above, he passed his genius off as something akin to a party trick, calling on the audience to pass up a book—any bo...
