New face

I mentioned in this space the other day that “personal distractions” were among the things that had kept me from posting for three weeks. The main one is the fact that I have fallen in love.  The woman in question is Cheril Mulligan, a theater-and-film buff from and lifelong resident of Long Island. We became acquainted through Twitter, on which she tweets under a pseudonym, and “Three on the Aisle,” the theatrical podcast that I do with Peter Marks and Elisabeth Vincentelli. We got to k...

Catch-up time

As I wrote in this space on Monday, I was forced to take a three-week hiatus from blogging because of overwork and technical problems. Now that I’m back again, I want to post links to the things I wrote and did elsewhere during my absence: • I reviewed streaming webcasts of two plays, Quintessence Theatre’s production of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth and American Players Theater’s production of Tom Stoppard’s Rough Crossing. • I reviewed three live shows, Shakespeare & Compan...

Farther along

It’s just short of seven months since the death of my beloved wife, and not until recently did I feel that I was starting to become myself again. Sometimes the pain of Hilary’s loss takes me by surprise and I find myself crying — but not often. – Terry Teachout

The presence of the absence

I don’t know how I’ve managed to survive the simultaneous losses of my beloved spouse and the art form to which I have devoted more than a decade and a half of my life. But I’m still here, and if Hilary’s death and the closing of America’s theaters didn’t kill me, then I figure I’m in it for the long haul. I hope you are, too. – Terry Teachout

Thank-you note

My beloved Hilary died a month ago tonight. I could not begin to thank enough people for saving my life, which is what all of you did by reaching out to me, generously and unhesitatingly. – Terry Teachout

A letter to unknown friends

A few days after my beloved Hilary received her double-lung transplant, I published an open letter in The Wall Street Journal addressed to the family of the anonymous organ donor whose lungs she used to breathe during the last month of her life. – Terry Teachout

Joy in the afternoon

This is, first of all, an expression of profound gratitude for the innumerable messages of sympathy I have received. I thought you might like to read about Hilary’s last good day. – Terry Teachout

Two storms are about to collide in rare 'Fujiwhara dance'

Have you ever wondered what happens when two cyclones get a little too close to each other? As we’re witnessing off the coast of Mexico this week, it can be strangely beautiful. Tropical Storms Irwin and Hilary are nearing each other, and when they meet, they will engage in what is called a Fujiwhara dance, where two storms tango around each other until the stronger “eats” the weaker storm. A Fujiwhara dance occurs when two storms get close enough for their circulations to impact one another –...

Daenerys Targaryen Gets Reimagined as the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - and It's Badass

It's hard to imagine the Game of Thrones characters existing anywhere outside of their fantastical, twisted, and gruesome universe. One artist, however, is attempting to do just that by illustrating many of the core characters with all our modern accoutrements: piercings, tattoos, and graphic t-shirts. Said artist, Hilary Heffron, uses Photoshop to create her anachronistic portrayals of everyone from Daenerys Targaryen to Jon Snow to Margaery Tyrell. The character's tattoos, in particular, are r...
