Frazetta's "A Princess of Mars" painting sells for $1.2 million at auction

A Princess of Mars (1970) is one of Frank Frazetta's most famous works. He painted it for the 1970 hardcover edition of Edgar Rice Burroughs' first John Carter of Mars novel. Interestingly, Frazetta feared the publisher wouldn't return the art so he painted a copy for himself. The copy is generally thought to be superior to the version he created for the book cover. It sold this week at Heritage Auctions for $1.2 million. "Frank Frazetta always felt that his art transcended genres," said Nadi...

'Norman said the president wants a pyramid': how starchitects built Astana

If you could see through the forest of selfie-sticks, the view from the top of the central pavilion of the Astana Expo was a prospect like no other. It was strange enough to be standing on a glass footbridge at the summit of the tallest spherical building in the world – nicknamed the Death Star – with glass bubble elevators zooming up a central neon-lit atrium behind you and a precipitous void plunging beneath your feet. All that was missing was Luke Skywalker dangling from the bridge. read more

These Tan Leather Boots Are Inspired By Those Worn By Luke Skywalker

If these tan leather boots look familiar, that’s because the designer behind them – Althea Fyfe – designed them with the style of Luke Skywalker in mind. Duck boot in style, the boots are designed to be a desert boot rather than a winter boot and feature a canvas, leather and rope composition. h/t: trendhunter Completely made by hand, the leather boots fit onto the foot almost like a baggy sock; from here, the loose canvas fabric is tied in place to keep the boot taut on the ankle. Throw Up Your Arms

In Billie Joe Armstrong's lyric for the song "Know Your Enemy?" in American Idiot, the drug dealer St. Jimmy, Johnny's "dark half" alter-ago, tries to tell Johnny that he is his own worst enemy, that only he is standing in his way. This starts a sequence of songs tracking the descent of our three heroes to rock bottom."Enemy" segues into "21 Guns," the three women's poignant attempt to reach their men. This is a song about hitting rock bottom, about "letting go and letting God" essentially (jus...

American Idiot

America is a very angry place right. And boy, do we have a show that taps into that zeitgeist and tries to understand it...I knew nothing about American Idiot when I walked into the Broadway theatre to see it. I had heard of Green Day, but knew none of their songs. All I knew was people loved this show. And I'm a huge rock opera fan, so I figured I would at least enjoy it.And it fucking bowled me over, from the first song. Who starts a musical with "Don't wanna be an American idiot!" It was lik...
