Tracey Emin on her cancer: 'I will find love. I will have exhibitions. I will enjoy life'

As she recovers from a brutal summer of cancer treatment, Tracey Emin takes us round her new show – and imagines spending the next 30 years painting in her pyjamas to the sound of birdsong‘I am so lucky,” says Tracey Emin as we stand in the grand galleries of the Royal Academy. I can tell, from her brown eyes, that she’s smiling beneath her face mask. As we roam rooms painted moody blue for her new exhibition, in which her paintings, bronzes and neons are juxtaposed with the oils and watercolour...

Investigation Clears Detroit Institute Of Arts Director Of Conflict Of Interest

“The inquiry by Crowell & Moring, hired by the DIA board, came after a June complaint by the nonprofit legal organization Whistleblower Aid was sent to the Internal Revenue Service and the Michigan attorney general. The complaint alleged conflict-of-interest violations tied to the loan of an El Greco painting to the museum by [director Salvador] Salort-Pons‘s father-in-law, Dallas businessman Alan M. May.” – The Detroit News

Michigan Opera Theatre Picks Yuval Sharon As Its Next Artistic Director

Sharon’s presence elevates MOT immediately to international relevance in the opera world and brings to Detroit the kind of innovative artistic leader unique among the city’s cultural institutions. His hiring is a bold but risky choice for a company with a largely conservative artistic profile that has historically lived on razor-thin financial margins and struggled to forge a post-DiChiera identity. – Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Institute Of Arts Borrowed An El Greco From The Director’s Father-In-Law. Ethics Violation?

Because the display of a painting in a prestigious museum can increase its value, the loan can be seen as breaking conflict-of-interest and self-dealing rules and a complaint was filed with the IRS and the Michigan attorney general. The director says that all procedures were properly followed, being shown at the museum wouldn’t really affect the value of an Old Master, and, basically, if you can get the long-term loan of an El Greco, why wouldn’t you? – The New York Times

A three-judge panel from the 6th Circuit ruled 2-to-1 that “education — at least in the minimum form discussed here — is essential to nearly every interaction between a citizen and her government. … Voting, taxes, the legal system, jury duty — all of these are predicated on the ability to read and comprehend written thoughts.” The decision revives a suit against the state of Michigan by a group of Detroit public school students. – Publishers Weekly

A Thoughtfully-Designed Litter Box for Cats Finds Kickstarter Success

While most dog owners don't need an elevated pet feeder, everyone who owns an indoor cat needs a litter box. The designers at a Michigan-based pet supply company called Tuft & Paw gambled that cat owners would pay $99 for a designey one--and they were right: The Kickstarter campaign for their Cove design, which sought $10,000 in funding, just passed $140,871.Aside from making their litter box look, I say again, designey, they did address some functional issues that I'm surprised most litter boxe...

California Passes Bill SB 372, to Make Beverage Manufacturers & Distributors Responsible for Recycling

California's recycling system is failing. They're no different from many U.S. states and counties; following China's unassailable decision to stop accepting the world's refuse, municipalities and businesses across the country have struggled to find a way to recycle without going broke. In California, more than half of their recycling centers have closed in the past six years, and "forty-five of Los Angeles County's 88 cities have no recycling centers," according to the L.A. Times.Photo by Brian ...

Super-Cool Amphibious Russian Vehicle Looks Like It Was Drawn By a Five-Year-Old

THIS LOOKS LIKE SO MUCH FUN.On a recent trip to an off-road park in Michigan, 95octane writer Paul Strauss spotted this crazy vehicle:Image credit: 95octane I love this thing because it looks like something a five-year-old drew. It looks like something a Transportation Design student gets an "F" for handing in. It looks like something created by a designer trying to figure out a new CAD package and failing.Yet it's real, and it's called a Sherp. As Strauss explains:For those unfamiliar with the ...

Michigan Lawmakers Say There’s A Crisis With The State’s School Libraries

“Michigan ranks 47th in the nation for its ratio of students to certified librarians — it’s also in the bottom five in literacy. The two statistics have legislators like State Rep. Darrin Camilleri questioning why more isn’t being done to increase the presence of librarians in schools.” So he and colleagues have introduced three different bills to address the problem. – WXYZ (Detroit)
