Mack & Mabel - The Perennial Bridesmaid

Reviewed by Judd Hollander Watching Douglas Sills sing “Movies Were Movies”, the opening number in the recent Encores! production of the 1974 Broadway musical Mack & Mabel, one can understand just how wonderful this work has the potential to be. Sadly, the show falters almost immediately as Jerry Herman's powerful score is undone by a number of issues. Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake - Finding The Freedom To Be Yourself

Reviewed by Judd Hollander One of the basic tenets of people everywhere is the need to express who they are inside. This is the underlying principle beautifully expressed in the absolutely breathtaking Mathew Bourne's Swan Lake; as performed to the stirring music of Tchaikovsky. The work first seen on Broadway in 1998 and now currently at New York City Center . The Prince (James Lovell) of an unnamed country is tormented by dreams of a mysterious flying creature. G...

High Button Shoes - Not Reaching Nearly High Enough

Reviewed by Judd Hollander Pretty much relegated to the dustbin of history, the Broadway musical High Button Shoes is mainly remembered by theatre lovers and historians for its “Bathing Beauty Ballet”. A classic piece of choreography by Jerome Robbins which opens act two. The show itself not seen on Broadway since its initial run 1947, where it notched an impressive string of 747 performances. Sadly, a recent revival by Encores! at New York City Center showed why this work is ...

Lady in the Dark - An Enlightening Journey

Reviewed by Judd Hollander The one thing most people will tell you when it comes to dreams is that they often don't make sense. Either literally or chronologically. Different people from various aspects of one’s life coming together in ways not possible in the waking world, but making perfect sense in the context of the dream. As for what it all means, that's a matter for psychoanalytic study. It’s also the premise Moss Hart, Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin used as a starting point for the 1941...

Call Me Madam - Bright, Bouncy, and at times creaky

Reviewed by Judd Hollander Given the state of things in the world today, one would think the time would be prefect for a revival of the 1950 Broadway musical, Call Me Madam. With a score by Irving Berlin, a book by Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse, and starring Ethel Merman, this gentle political satire originally ending up running for a total of 644 performances. In ...

Fall For Dance Toronto Expands Again

When the original populist model for Fall For Dance was launched by New York City Center in 2004, there were indeed whispered concerns about whether the rock-bottom ticket price might undermine less well-funded presenters by engendering false expectations. The whispers soon evaporated. Fall For Dance, in both its New York and Toronto iteration, has always been clearly promoted as an event designed to whet an appetite among new, often younger audiences for the full spectrum of dance.

Me and My Girl - A Musical From Yesterday Comes Roaring To Life

Reviewed by Judd Hollander In this world of message musicals and important themes, it’s nice to know that every so often a vehicle comes along whose only purpose is to offer a good time. The 1937 tuner Me and My Girl, which was recently resurrected for an engagement as part of the Encores! series at New York City Center , is such a work. With a storyline paper thin; musical numbers that have often have nothing to do with advancing the plot; dusty jokes which were old when the mu...

Hey, Look Me Over! - It's What's Not There That's The Problem

Reviewed by Judd Hollander For the last quarter of a century, the appeal of the Encores! series at New York City Center has been the opportunity for audiences to see little known, or long forgotten musicals return to the stage. Thus allowing these properties to be seen and appreciated by a new generation of theatre goers. In keeping with that tradition, kicking off the organization's 25th anniversary season is Hey, Look Me Over! Conceived by Jack Viertel, the company's artistic directo...
