Those Olympic anti-sex beds? Theyre actually for recycling.

Among all the news about the Tokyo Olympics, you might have heard one particularly wild story about the beds in the Olympic Village. These beds got an unforeseen amount of press coverage when American runner Paul Chelimo joked that the cardboard material was used to discourage “intimacy among athletes.” While the idea of an ‘anti-sex’ bed design captured peoples’ interest, this story is merely a joke gone wild. But there’s still a good reason to talk about these cardboard beds — they’re recyclab...

The person who may or may not be Banksy is at it again, this time stenciling up a London Underground carriage with his familiar rat characters. January linkfest

I’ll get to the regularly scheduled links in a bit, but I wanted to lead off with some recommendations from my 2019 media diet (a term I’ve borrowed from Jason Kottke, whose blog always makes for tasty consumption). A couple of magazine articles: “What I Learned in Avalanche School,” by H eidi Julavits for the New York Times Magazine. The story is indeed about avalanche school, but because Julvaits is a brilliant writer, it includes passages like this one: “The pursuit of joy, even if tha...

New NYC Subway Design Fail: Lockable Folding Seats

The reliability of New York City's overtaxed, delay-ridden subway system has declined precipitously in recent years. Individual tales of woe abound on social media; after a recent three-hour delay, this student even missed his own graduation. One of the worst commutes is the morning crush from overcrowded Williamsburg to Manhattan, where straphangers routinely have to let two or three trains go by before they can manage to squeeze inside.
