Conductor Grant Llewellyn, Late Of North Carolina Symphony, Makes His Way Back From A Stroke

Last summer, back home in Wales after completing his 16-year term in Raleigh, he suffered what turned out to be a three-day stroke that severely impaired the use of his right arm and leg. After a month’s hospitalization and six months of physical therapy, though he can’t hold a baton, he is back working with the Orchestre national de Bretagne, his ensemble in Rennes, France. “The irony of my situation is that I can conduct Beethoven symphonies but I can’t get out of bed. I can’t tie my shoelace...

Cool Kids Guide of Things to Do in Seattle with Kids (adult’s love these too!)

Seattle is cool. Uniquely cool. And there is a great balance of things to do in Seattle with kids AND for us adults too! Starbucks. Amazon. Microsoft. Costco. Boeing. Pearl Jam. Nirvana. Just a few things Seattle, Washington is famous for producing. How can one city produce so many great things? It’s a city that has been high on my radar since Seattle grunge became a played out thing on my walkman. I just had to go to the place that birthed some of my favorite music ever. And then while we were...

Virtual reality helps scientists plot the ideal urban green space

Green spaces offer urban residents the chance to escape the concrete jungle and experience nature’s restorative benefits — if those spaces are well-designed. North Carolina State University researchers found vegetation density can impact a person’s feeling of safety, depending on where green space is located, and immersive virtual reality helped them test perceptions. Virtual reality doesn’t only offer an escape into fantastical images. NC State University researchers employed VR to explore di...

Henry Patrick Raleigh

Henry Patrick Raleigh was a classic American illustrator active in the early part of the 20th century. Raleigh is not as well known as many of the illustrators from the Golden Age and the mid-20th century eras that bracketed his career, and undeservedly so. I can think of few illustrators, or artists in general, whose draftsmanship was more fluid and gestural. Raleigh’s ability to convey body language, expression and the sense of languid grace of figures in repose is just amazing. In particular...

North Carolina home embodies the spirit of Raleigh's first progressive street car neighborhood

The design doesn't aim to mimic the architecture of the surrounding buildings, but tries to embody the spirit of the neighborhood. Four levels of living spaces are framed by two board-framed concrete walls that stretch from the public sidewalk into the site and the private service access area. A multi-level circulation gallery hall flows through the house and the site, establishing a strong connection between interior and exterior spaces.
