Hollywood’s Seven Most Influential Flops Of The 2010s

“In 2010, Hollywood was drunk on the success of Avatar and decided 3D tech was the wave of the future. … Large ensemble Garry Marshall rom-coms like Valentine’s Day were still winners, as were Harrison Ford non-franchise thrillers and Nicholas Sparks movies with indistinguishable posters. None of these things are true anymore. Conventional wisdom around movies can turn on a dime, especially in such a volatile, transitional entertainment era. And nothing changes Hollywood’s tune quite like a big...

Valentine's Day flower deliveries come at a huge cost to the environment

Americans purchase an estimated 250 million roses for Valentine’s Day every year, many of which come via flowery delivery from South America. But shipping these roses in time for the holiday comes at a heavy cost to the environment. Colombia has become a major trading center for roses because of the Andean Trade Preference Act, which was passed under President George H.W. Bush. This act encourages farmers in the region to grow roses as an alternative to coca plants. Growing these precious petal...

To My Dream Exhibit – A Sonnet to Celebrate Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day has got to be one of the strangest holidays ever. From its dark origins in Roman history to modern day celebrations, it has come a long way. Most people associate this day of romance with Saint Valentine, who was martyred for marrying Christian couples in the 3rd century. While it feels like a bit of a stretch to associate this selfless act with the modern-day concept of gifting material goods on Valentine’s Day, you have to admit that is pretty romantic. In fact, we possibly ...

9 ways to have an eco-friendly Valentine's Day

While there is no truth to the rumor that Hallmark invented Valentine’s Day, there is no denying that many people think of it as a manufactured holiday designed to sell cards, flowers and chocolate. Every February 14th, millions of people buy cards and roses, and drop a ton of cash on diamonds, gold and silver. In 2019, Americans are expected to spend almost 20 billion dollars for the romantic holiday, and that breaks down to nearly $150 a person. All of that consumer spending leads to a lot of...

Charlotte Gainsbourg: Bombs Away

From Take 2, Charlotte Gainsbourg’s sundry five-track EP, “Bombs Away” rides on dance floor-ready synth waves. Gainsbourg’s vocals—and the narrative lyrics—set a tone of curious immediacy. The track, which was produced by SebastiAn, joins a cover of Kanye West’s “Runaway,” a live version of Gainsbourg’s hit “Deadly Valentine,” and two other new songs on the EP—one that demonstrate the depth of the singer’s vision and (bilingual) capabilities.

A Tribute to Kate Spade, an Iconic Designer Gone Too Soon

Among the many, many tributes to Kate Spade, the founder of the eponymous brand who died Tuesday in New York in an apparent suicide, fellow fashion designer Liz Lange noted her graciousness: “Devastated by this news. My heart goes out to Andy and to Kate’s entire family. This sounds cliched but in her case was really true: she was truly as beautiful on the inside as on the out. I worshipped the brand she built at such a young age and will never forget her kindness to me when I was first startin...

See Your Favorite Horror Movies Turned into ‘Goosebumps’ Books

For children of the 1990s, the best thing in school was getting the order pamphlet for new books from the Scholastic Book Club. That’s because they almost always featured the latest in R.L. Stine’s ongoing horror book series Goosebumps. There were dozens of books released under the banner with several other books spinning off from the primary line-up. Now one artist has taken the iconic Goosebumps book covers from that decade and mashed them up with some of your favorite horror movies. Check ou...

PRINTS

Using my Gelli printing plate, I played with some crow shapes and acrylic colors.  Also making some Valentine prints but I'll share those later.   Starting to get into the Valentine's mode... The heart is just laid on the print, not glued on yet.  I may leave it off.   These are crow shapes but for some reason they make me think of the pelicans landing on Anna Maria Island = goofy and unwieldy but they make it work!
