Replacing the Input Shaft in Scarlett's Gearbox

Scarlett's gearbox's input shaft's splines were damaged when the clutch disk splines failed over time.  As the splines on the clutch driven plates wore, they damaged the splines on the input shaft. Note the gouges on the splines. Today, I got the part from Holopaw Ural in Florida, the only dealer who had it in stock.  IMWA (aka the mother ship) in Redmond, WA had said they wouldn't have more in stock till sometime in March; so I was fortunate to have Terry Crawford offer to call Gene at Hol...

GM to Sink More Cash Into Lansing Crossover Plant

On Monday, General Motors stated its intent to invest $36 million into Lansing Delta Township Assembly, maker of large crossovers since its inception. Little info was provided on the details of the investment, and GM claims the cash won’t expand Lansing’s complement of 2,600 employees. Automated Driving Systems Aren’t Ready to Save Pedestrians: Safety Group

Pedestrian fatalities in the United States climbed sharply over the past decade. Between 2008 and 2017, which constitutes the most recent data available, on-foot fatalities increased 35.4 percent — despite walking not growing in popularity. All told, the United States lost 49,340 people within the timeframe; about 13 people per day. While still lower than vehicular deaths, […] The post Automated Driving Systems Aren’t Ready to Save Pedestrians: Safety Group appeared first on The Truth About Cars...

Goal Unlocked: Toyota’s non-Prius Delivers the MPGs

It’s Mileage Monday, apparently. In unveiling the upcoming Corolla Hybrid late last year, Toyota predicted the normal-looking alternative to its long-running Prius would deliver a combined rating of 50 mpg, once the EPA got around to testing it. Not the hardest bar to clear, given that the 2020 Corolla Hybrid uses the same 121-horsepower hybrid […] The post Goal Unlocked: Toyota’s non-Prius Delivers the MPGs appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

The Ford Focus ST Americans Can’t Have Looks Great

Europe invented the hot hatch, so perhaps it’s fitting that the Ford Focus ST lives on in that market. But we’d be lying if we said we were happy about it — especially after hearing just how good the next-generation model is shaping up to be. While Ford nixed the model in North America, part […] The post The Ford Focus ST Americans Can’t Have Looks Great appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

A Cautionary Tale: Inheriting a BMW R100GS project

Love ’em or hate ’em, BMW’s GS behemoths have dominated the ADV market for almost four decades now. Five years ago, the 500,000th GS rolled off the Berlin production line, and we’re betting it won’t be long before the go-anywhere boxer hits the million mark. We don’t see many GS customs, though. These machines are a triumph of function over form, and most owners like it that way. So this R100GS is something of a rarity—and its backstory is rather strange too. It belongs to Hasselblad Mas...

QOTD: 500-horsepower Four-bangers?

It wasn’t too long ago that four-cylinder engines were the domain of miserable econoboxes. Look no further than the wretched-but-reliable Iron Duke for proof of four-pot motoring misery. Ducati’s CEO Claudio Domenicali Talks Electric Motorcycles

Battery Technology Isn’t Quite There Yet The future is electric. That’s what Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali said at a University of Bologna event not too long ago. In an interview with Motorcycle.com, Domenicali clarified his remarks. He said that he still believes in what he said, but that the electric future may still be a little ways off, at least for a real-deal motorcycle. Domenicali said battery technology isn’t quite there yet. It would work for an e-mobility solution but not necessarily ...
