Boondocking again at the Hugo SWA (State Wildlife Area)

The day started with one goal and after several factors ended up with me boondocking at the Hugo SWA, one of my favorite boondocking spots. Late sunrise at Oil Well Flats BLM site First I thought I'd find a spot to park near Pikes Peak and take Yagi up America's Mountain.  The search for a spot to leave the RV and trailer proved fruitless and after wasting some time on the southern portion of Rampart Range Road, the weather had moved in and going up the mountain was no longer attractive.Note t...

Elon Musk on taking Tesla private: ‘That ship has sailed’

Elon Musk would prefer if Tesla, which is known for its volatile share price and is among the most heavily shorted stock, were a private company, but acknowledged during an earnings call Wednesday that it wasn’t likely. Musk can dream, can’t he? “Unfortunately that ship had sailed,” Musk said flatly, in response to a question from Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas. Musk said Tesla as a public company was a distraction at times and then added, “I’m not sure what to do about it.” The questio...

Tesla plans to launch an insurance product ‘in about a month’

Tesla is developing an insurance product, which could be launched in about a month, CEO Elon Musk said during a call with analysts Wednesday following its first-quarter earnings report. “It will be much more compelling than anything else out there,” he said. Musk didn’t provide further details on what the insurance product might look like, but it will most certainly place value on its Autopilot system, an advanced driver assistance system that is considered one of the most robust and at times, m...

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS: Inside The S-Class of SUVs

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS is the brand’s most luxurious SUV. It’s bigger inside for 2020 to give passengers more comfort and space. An available powertrain combination produces over 500 lb-ft. of torque.  SUVs are, or at least started out, as barely civilized work trucks designed to haul people and their stuff from point A to B no matter the road conditions. Over time, people wanted a less truck-like demeanor and more car-like comfort. Which leads us directly to this, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G...

Tesla reports $702 million loss in first quarter

Tesla reported Wednesday wider-than-expected loss of $702 million, or $4.10 a share, in the first quarter after disappointing delivery numbers, costs and pricing adjustments to its vehicles threw the automaker off of its profitability track. Tesla reported that it also incurred $67 million due to a combination ...

TXX Interceptor: A custom Royal Enfield 650 from Thrive

The new Royal Enfield twins are a godsend for custom builders. By modern standards, they are simple on both the mechanical and electrical fronts: you don’t need a degree in Electrical Science from MIT to change the instrument panel. They’re also affordable. In the US, prices for the Interceptor start at a mere $5,799, which is well over $3,000 less than a Sportster Iron 883 or Triumph Street Twin. There’s also a lot to be said for starting with a new rather than used motorcycle—because you...

Harley-Davidson Sales Continue to Decline, but Not as Quickly as Estimates Predicted

The Bleeding Has Slowed Harley-Davidson reported a further decline in sales today for the first quarter of 2019. Despite the drop in the U.S. of 4.2 percent, the decline in Europe of 2.1 percent, and a drop of 6.7 percent worldwide compared to the same time the previous year, some are seeing it as a win for the company. It marks a slowing in the decline in sales. Estimates for the sales decline were far higher, meaning Harley did better than many analysts expected. The company’s net income drop...

The 340,000-mile 2004 Toyota Camry Is Finally Gone, But It’s Far From Dead

The story of the 340,000-mile 2004 Toyota Camry LE V6 that became the 15-winter story of a 347,000-mile Camry now belongs to another author. My in-laws’ beautifully-maintained Camry ticked up to 352,000 miles – 567,013 kilometres on the odometer, to be precise – when they finally replaced their stalwart sedan with a 2019 Kia Optima. A self-parking scooter that chauffers you around

With shared scooters being the new go-to mode of transport for inner-city commuters and tourists alike, we have seen an infestation of these two-wheeled contraptions. However, their similar looks can make it a challenge to differentiate between the companies and the nature of their use leads to them littering our streets. ROL may just be the answer to both of these annoyances.ROL completely transforms the user experience by removing the scooters reliance on manual intervention completely! This h...

How It Works: Variable all-wheel drive

By the sound of it, you'd think all-wheel drive is...well, all wheels driving, but that isn't always the case. Most vehicles use variable AWD, which determines how much power to send to the wheels depending on driving conditions. Find out more in my "How It Works" column at the National Post (Driving.ca). 2019 New York Auto Show Recap – Thrill Meets Chill
