February linkfest

“Trade characters” like Aunt Jemima and the Quaker Oats man used to be much more common in American commerce than they are today, writes logo expert James I. Bowie in Marker. They were so common, in fact, that the US Patent and Trademark Office assigned six-digit codes to trademark applications to “capture personal characteristics, including race and gender, as they were perceived in American culture many decades ago”: There are codes for Native Americans and Asian Pacific people, but not fo...

Changing campsites and a camera malfunction.

I decided to displace to a better campsite within the Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area this morning, it's a bit more secluded/isolated and away from the UTV crowd that showed up last night. It was within walking distance of site 11 where I had been so not a big hassle. Not sure if it was the same road runner but one of them showed up at the new campsite, walking around the URRV like he owned the place.  I followed him around and once he was in the light, I activated the zoom on the Sony HX80....gr...

Jeep is laying off 150 workers that would have otherwise been employed at its Belvidere Assembly Plant, which actually produces the Jeep Cherokee instead of the long defunct, full-size Plymouth. Based on the timing, this decision appears to have something to do with the FCA-PSA Group merger that formed Stellantis. We’re only able to guess the core […] The post Stellantis Laying off 150 Jeep Employees in Illinois appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

The Best Motorcycles of the 1940s

The 1940s was a particularly turbulent decade in world history, dominated by the Second World War causing widespread destruction all over the globe. As the Allies and Axis powers battled in different theatres, the world’s largest industrial manufacturers were forced to support the war effort in whatever way they could, and a wave of innovation swept across the planet. There’s no doubt that war is bad, but generally, the military-industrial machine helps fuel innovation, and during the war years,...

Box Fresh: A zero mile Honda CB750 Cafe Racer

For custom motorcycle builders that skew towards older bikes, nothing satisfies quite like finding a clean, low-mileage donor. But finding a motor with literally zero miles on it? That’s the Holy Grail. This purposeful cafe racer was built from two components: a beat-up 1992 Honda CB750, and a separate CB750 engine that had never been fired up. It’s the work of Holger Breuer, who builds bikes part time as HB-Custom from his workshop in the German maritime town, Husum. The commission came ...

Bridgestone Now Has Eco-Friendly Tires

Introducing The Techsyn Line Beyond frequent oil changes and a few valve adjustments here and there, most motorcyclists will burn through a hefty amount of tires during their lifetime of riding. I’ve been riding for four years now, and I’ve managed to rip through a new rear tire every season… Of course, it depends on what kind of riding you find yourself doing, and how hard you handle your faithful steed, but at the end of the day to keep your motorcycle safe on the roadways (or track) having f...

Berlin Won’t See 2021 Motorrad Days Festival Due To BMW’s Cancellation

See ‘Ya In 2022! Although many motorcycle festivals in America such as Daytona’s Bike Week will continue this year despite the pandemic, Berlin won’t be quite as lucky (or unlucky, depending on your views regarding COVID-19) as BMW has withdrawn their participation in the 2021 Motorrad Days Festival. BMW had cancelled their 2020 plans due to pandemic reasons after moving the festival from Munich to Berlin, and that precedent will continue for the 2021 calendar year.
