Overlander: A BMW G/S built for serious adventure travel

Nothing grows knowledge like experience. So the best way to figure out how to design a continent-crossing motorcycle, is to actually cross a continent—then see what works, and what doesn’t. Back in 2016, Matias Corea rode his 1985 BMW R80G/S Paris Dakar from Brooklyn all the way to Ushuaia, in Argentina. Now he’s got another trip planned: a 22,000-mile journey from his native Barcelona to Cape Town in South Africa. So he’s taken the lessons from his first trip, and built his vision of the ult...

Ford to shut down Brazilian auto plants

By Ban Klayman and Alberto Alerigi | Reuters DETROIT – Ford Motor Co said on Monday it will close its three plants in Brazil this year and take pretax charges of about $4.1 billion as the COVID-19 pandemic amplified the company’s under use of its manufacturing capacity. Production will cease immediately at Ford’s plants in Camaçari and Taubaté, with some parts production continuing for a few months to support inventories for aftermarket sales. The Troller plant in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, will co...

Custom Bikes Of The Week: 6 September, 2020

A sweet Yamaha SR500 bobber from Sweden, a bright orange Honda CBR600 from the Netherlands, a Kawasaki KZ750 cafe racer from Argentina, and a stylish BMW R65 street tracker from France. We’re racking up the (virtual) air miles this week. Honda CBR600 F2 by WiMoto The Dutch flag is a tricolor of red, white, and blue but if there’s a color associated with the country, it’s orange. Most sports teams in the Netherlands are kitted out in oranje, and so is this punchy little CBR600 from builder ...

Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman Finish Long Way Up on LiveWires

From Ushuaia, Argentina to Los Angeles, California When I first hear that Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman were going to take Harley-Davidson’s new LiveWire from Argentina to California for another show called Long Way Up, I was a bit skeptical. Where would they charge the bikes? Well, now the team has finished the ride and they made it all the way on the electric motorcycles.  According to ADVPulse, the guys got charges along the way. Locals helped them charge the bikes and even they sometime...

HELL FOR LEATHER – Ducati 749 ‘Arriera’

Every country has some national symbols that they are proud of. America has the bald eagle, Australia has the kangaroo, England has the Queen and Argentina has the gaucho. What is a gaucho, I hear you ask? The gauchos were fearless and skillful horsemen who used to handmake tools for carve out wood and metal. These men were legends and are a significant part of the folklore in Argentina, where bike builder and sunglasses entrepreneur Sebastian Achaval is from. “I am from that part of the world...

EL PERRO LOCO. The ‘Caniche’ Zanella Bobber from Republica Motocicletas

Written by Andrew Jones When it comes to creativity, they say there’s a fine line between inspiration and insanity. It’s no coincidence that rock stars go off the rails in a spectacular fashion and artists often need to break down before they break through. But luckily for Argentina’s Republica Motocicletas and this 150cc Zanella Sapucai, it was their client who was the crazy one, and it was their own creativity that was the big winner. Chatting to us from their workshop in Córdoba, Argent...

HEART STOPPER. Republica Motocicletas’ ‘Bypass’ Honda XR 250

Written by Marlon Slack The team at Republica Motocicletas don’t struggle to find business. The Argentinian workshop has belted out over 30 motorcycles in their short time on the scene and they can’t keep up with the amount of orders coming in. Why? Well, it’s because they create rides like this, a killer 2013 Honda Tornado 250 dubbed the ‘Bypass’.  Republica is a prime example of one of the best things that can happen when mates get together. Initially founded by childhood friends Carlos ...

LUCKY PUNK. A Moto Guzzi V7 Racer from Lucky Customs

Written by Martin Hodgson Buying a brand new motorcycle is a big decision for anyone. But to then hand it over with zero mileage on the clock to be chopped up for modification means you’ve gotta ask yourself one question: “Do you feel lucky?” Well, do ya, punk? With a resounding ‘yes,’ Motoplex of Argentina – importers to the country of new Italian motorcycles – avoided the shot and were simply blown away. They’d made just the right call and handed the keys of a new Moto Guzzi V7 III Stone to...

Custom Bikes Of The Week: 18 March, 2018

A sinister Yamaha XJR1300 , a smokin’ hot RD350, a Honda CX500 with R6 suspension, and an 80s-style Hayabusa rocketship. It’s all about the grunt this week. Yamaha RD350 by Jake Drummond Working from drawings that he’d penned about a year earlier, 24-year-old Jake Drummond wanted a custom that dipped toes in both the board tracker and mountain bike ponds. After two years of labor and learning on the fly, he’s done more than succeed with his Yamaha RD350. Jake didn’t even know how to weld pr...

The Last Flight Of The Featherweights: The Touring-bodied Fiat 124 C4

All images courtesy the author. Some weeks ago, I spent a lovely Saturday morning while visiting the little Bonfanti-Vimar Car Museum set in Bassano Del Grappa, a charming town placed at the feet of North Eastern Alps range, halfway between Vicenza and Treviso and between Padua and Trento. This town, better known for its wood bridge (the Ponte Degli Alpini) and its world famous ‘shine, the grappa, also hosts this little but rather interesting museum, one of the best of its genre in Italy. Old Power, New Heart

Think of Mad Max meeting Steve McQueen and deciding they’re going to make a bike together. A sentence which would otherwise seem almost too obscure to happen looks to have happened thanks to the guys at Republica Motorcicletas of Argentina. A truly stunning aesthetic that’s rugged and fierce on the eyes – the 1994 Honda NX350 Sahara is known to these guys as “Old Power.” It may be hard to see some of the old NX350, and this is due to the build – the guys at Republica Motorcicletas built this two...

Volkswagen Trademarks a Pickup Name, But Is It Worth Pulling the Trigger on Another Midsize?

Amarok. The worst sounds mystical, conjuring up images of hairy Ice Age beasts and the grizzled 24-year-old grandfathers who once hunted them. Amarok also refers to a midsize Volkswagen pickup that’s built in Argentina and sold overseas, a pickup the automaker now wants to trademark in the United States. Is this the first step towards […] The post Volkswagen Trademarks a Pickup Name, But Is It Worth Pulling the Trigger on Another Midsize? appeared first on The Truth About Cars.
