Harley-Davidson Will Eliminate 700 Jobs Worldwide by the End of 2020

2020 Has Not Been a Good Year Few people are having a good year in 2020, and if you’re a part of Harley-Davidson, things are about to get worse. The company announced that it will be cutting 700 jobs around the world. Two hundred of those 500 were unfilled positions, though, so it’s more like 500 jobs, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. In another blow to the business, Chief Financial Officer John Olin left his position. He was with Harley for 17 years. His position will be filled by ...

Harley-Davidson’s ‘Rewire’ plan starts with 700 jobs cuts, ousted CFO

Harley-Davidson, the storied and struggling Milwaukee-based company that last year launched its first production electric motorcycle in an effort to reboot sales and appeal to a younger customer base, is cutting 700 jobs from its global operations. About 500 workers will be laid off before the end of the year, the company said Thursday. The company’s CFO John Olin is also out, effective immediately. Harley-Davidson’s current VP Treasurer Darrell Thomas has taken over as interim CFO until a succe...

Man Rides from Border-to-Border on His Harley-Davidson Livewire

Mexican Border to Canadian Border Nobody doubted the Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire to perform, but a lot of people think the range is too short for the bike’s high price tag and everyone says there’s not enough fast-charging infrastructure to support electric motorcycles nationwide. One man decided to see what it was like to take his LiveWire on a long-distance ride. He rode his new LiveWire from the Mexican border all the way to the Canadian border.  Diego Cardenas, a California resident, had his...

Harley-Davidson Has New Learn-to-Ride Programs

Getting More Folks Out There It’s no secret that Harley-Davidson needs more riders, so the company is focusing on getting new folks on motorcycles, specifically Harley bikes. The company has two new programs: “Experience the Ride” and “Learn to Ride.” The Experience the Ride program is for people who think they might be interested in riding but have never ventured to try it. It’s a short 90-minute program where participants will get some instruction from a professional coach and then ride a Har...

Custom Bikes Of The Week: Best of The No Show

The global pandemic hasn’t just shut down big events like Intermot and EICMA—a slew of grassroots custom shows have hit the pause button too. To help fill the void, Harley-Davidson put on The No Show, a weeklong Instagram-based showcase of top class builds. H-D pulled their entries from the canceled Mama Tried, Congregation and Born Free shows, with a few international wild cards in the mix, totaling 60 bikes from the USA and abroad. Each bike was posted to Harley’s Instagram account with a w...

Harley-Davidson Loses its Spot in the S&P 500 Index

That Can’t Be a Good Sign It’s no secret that Harley-Davidson is struggling to make things work right now. The company recently filed for a new line of credit and it’s had a quarter after quarter of sales declines. I recently learned of some more bad news: as of June 22, 2020, Harley-Davidson will no longer be a part of the S&P 500 index.  The S&P 500 index is a stock market index that tracks the stock performance of the 500 biggest U.S companies that are in the stock market. Triumph releases e-bicycle but no word on e-motorcycle debut

UK motorcycle manufacturer Triumph released an e-bicycle today, the Trekker GT — with 90 miles of riding range, a 250 watt motor and a 504 watt hour battery. With a five hour charge time, the bike weighs 52 pounds (24 kilograms) and can produce up to 60 Nm (or 29 ft-lbs) of torque. Triumph’s Trekker GT will be available for $3,750 at Triumph dealerships in the U.S. and abroad. The question is how this connects to the ultimate debut of a Triumph e-motorcycle. The manufacturer, which is a major gl...

Harley-Davidson Gets $350 Million 364-Day Credit Facility to Bolster Liquidity

To Cope With Challenges Harley-Davidson is a massive company and a lot of its assets are tied up. This means there might not be as much liquidity as the business would always like to have. To combat this issue, Harley recently took steps to get $350 million 364-day credit facility, according to an 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Auto Finance News reported on this fact. I first noticed the headline from Visordown, but that story is no longer accessible for some reason. Th...

Harley-Davidson Is Working on a Self-Balancing System

A Motorcycle Stands Alone Harley-Davidson may have a solution to the issue of motorcycle weight. According to some patents that were recently spotted by Cycle World, the company is working on a self-balancing system for its motorcycles. This makes sense. While Harley generally does a fantastic job of keeping the weight low and manageable, there’s no denying the bikes can get quite heavy. Weight isn’t much of an issue once you get moving, but at lower speeds, you can really feel it. That’s where...

IRONe 16 and IRONe 12 Harley-Davidson may have a new corporate strategy moving forward, but it seems it’s not totally letting go of some of the new initiatives it started. Custom Bikes Of The Week: 24 May, 2020

The Buell X1 gets its turn with the amazingly prolific builders at K-Speed. Plus an impossibly elegant CB550 from Kott Motorcycles, and a (barely) street legal Honda XR650R tracker. Honda CB550 by Dustin Kott This chic Honda cafe racer scores major points on both balance and subtlety. It’s the work of Dustin Kott, who’s been building Japanese cafe racers for longer than most—so he’s had plenty of time to hone his craft. Cake brings a Swedish take on e-motorcycle design to the US

Cake has crafted the Swedish edition of electric motorcycle design starting in the dirt. The Stockholm-based mobility startup’s debut, the Kalk OR, is a 150-pound, battery-powered two-wheeler engineered for agile off-road riding and available in a street-legal version. In appearance, Cake’s Kalk has a minimalist stance and doesn’t evoke “motorcycle” in any conventional sense. That was intentional, according to the company’s CEO, Stefan Ytterborn — a design aficionado and serial founder — who w...

Harley-Davidson Restarted Production, but it’s Limited

Wisconsin and Pennsylvania Get Rolling Harley-Davidson has been hurting, and the COVID-19 Pandemic didn’t help. There is hope. The company has a new CEO and it now has opened the production facilities in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania on a limited schedule. Obviously, Harley won’t be producing nearly the same number of motorcycles as they did pre-COVID-19, but it’s good to see the company restarting production.  It will focus on the best selling models and colors first. Harley will not be doing muc...

FortNine Does an In-Depth Look at Harley’s Slow Suicide

There’s Still Some Hope for HD Harley-Davidson is struggling through a very tough time right now. Kumram: A custom Heritage Softail Classic from Bangkok

The Heritage Softail Classic is the kind of bike most non-riders think of when they hear ‘Harley’—oodles of chrome, saddlebags, riveted leather and massive fenders. At over 700 pounds wet, it’s designed for long distance touring—and it isn’t the sort of machine you expect to find in a teeming metropolis in tropical Southeast Asia. So when Bangkok native Tuey Chuenprapar got the keys to a 2008 Heritage, it wasn’t exactly love at first sight. “I used to think it was a very ‘old’ looking bike,...

The missing links to grading Harley Davidson’s EV pivot

As Harley Davidson rounds year one on its electric debut, we’re still riding in the fog on how to evaluate the company’s EV pivot. The American symbol of gas, chrome, and steel released its first production electric motorcycle, the LiveWire last fall. The $29,799 machine is the first in a future line-up of EVs planned by Harley-Davidson — spanning motorcycles, bicycles and scooters. The LiveWire started shipping to dealers September 27. It’s meant to complement, not replace, Harley-Davidson’s pr...

1950 Harley-Davidson Daytona Racer For Sale

With Fewer Than Five Miles On It Harley-Davidson has a history of racing in TT races, hill climbs, road racing, and more.
