Southeast Asian ride-hailing firm Grab is aiming to start the new year with a bang and an awful load of bucks. Grab is messing up the world’s largest mapping community’s data in Southeast Asia

Grab, Southeast Asia’s top ride-hailing company, has hit a roadblock in its efforts to improve its mapping and routing service after running into trouble with OpenStreetMap, the world’s largest collaborative mapping community, through a series of blundering edits in Thailand. Grab, which gobbled up Uber’s local business in exchange for an equity swap earlier this year, has busily added details and upgraded the maps it uses across its eight markets in Southeast Asia. RIDE THE LIGHTNING. GDZH’s ‘Storm’ Suzuki A100 Racer

Written by Martin Hodgson While most motorcycle racing has its origins in Europe and North America one form of the sport is so quintessentially Australian it started life in New Zealand; just like Phar Lap and Russell Crowe. The humble Bucket Racer was a cheap way to get your need for speed and gets its name because the donor bikes were considered buckets of shit. Decades on and the style, like everything else, has gone global. But to find one of the best examples we’ve ever seen, we had to t...

SEVENTEEN SAMURAI. Smoked Garage’s ‘Rōnin’ Honda CB500X Off Road Racer

Written by Andrew Jones As any pimply teenager with too many hours on their gaming console will tell you, a ‘Rōnin’ samurai is an ancient Japanese swordsman without a lord or master. Mythologised to a crazy extent, them and their ilk have become common naming fodder for moto manufacturers and customisers alike. But in the case of Bali’s Smoked Garage, we’d like to raise our hand and point out the fly in this Far Eastern ointment. For a rōnin samurai to be legit, they have to be ‘without a mas...

Custom Bikes Of The Week: 2 December, 2018

A pair of Yamaha cafe racers from the opposite ends of the capacity spectrum, Roland Sands gets stuck into the Indian FTR 1200, and some sad news from the Vincent scene. Vale Patrick Godet The renowned Vincent builder Patrick Godet passed away on Tuesday. His Swiss friend Fritz Egli (yes, of Egli-Vincent fame) made the announcement and requested privacy. Godet was well known for his exquisite restorations, and restomods such as the 1330 Cafe Racer and the less radical Sport GT. These used...

MOTHER NATURE’S FUN. Erikson Bautista’s Wild Honda XR200 Adventurer

Written by Andrew Jones Being the custom bike freaks that we all are, it’s easy to forget that it’s not always about the bike. Sometimes it’s that perfect combination of bike, landscape, and weather that just comes together to make those bucket list moments you’ll be smiling about in your final hours. It’s not about the bike being king of the hill and tearing up all it surveys. Rather, it’s about the right tool for the job. Something that’s working together in harmony with everything else to ...

REBUILT LIKE A GUN. Lembinc’s ‘The Varial’ Royal Enfield Bullet Boardtracker

Written by Marlon Slack One of the best things about running a motorcycle blog are the friends that we make around the world. We’re on solid beer-drinking terms with builders in the US, across Europe and Australasia. But the guys that we really love are the mad buggers from Indonesia, like the team from Lembinc, who’ve crafted up one of the most kickass Royal Enfield Bullets we’ve ever seen. Java’s Lembinc is headed by Rizqi Patama. And the cheeky bugger isn’t even a fabricator or bike bui...

KNOCK ON WOOD. Kromwork’s ‘The 29’ S&S Boardtracker

Written by Martin Hodgson In the past year custom bikes from Indonesia have exploded onto the global scene and it seems the love of two wheels goes all the way to the top. President Jokowi himself owns a Royal Enfield powered bobber and a number of his ministers ride tricked out builds from Indonesia‘s Cleveland CycleWerks. 12 months ago CCW commissioned Kromworks to build them a board tracker powered by one of their single cylinder engines, now they’re doing it again with a thumping twin. Wi...

PUNCH DRUNK. Pap N Mam’s Boxer Kawasaki W400 Scrambler

Written by Andrew Jones After almost ten years of blogging about custom bikes, we’re pretty confident we could count the instances of builders who have made their own engines on one hand; even a hand that’d taken a trip through a rear chain and sprocket. Put simply, it almost never happens. And why would it? The engineering required to do something like that is only in reach for the manufacturers themselves. Or is it? Well, for Indonesia‘s Pap N Mam Modified, making their own engine was such ...

Grab pulls in $250M from Hyundai as ongoing round reaches $2.7B

The latest edition revealed today is Korean automotive firm Hyundai, which is investing $250 million. FILTHY RICH. Darizt’s ‘Royal Dirt’ Enfield Speedway Racer

Written by Marlon Slack One of the best damn things to happen to the custom scene in years is the rise of the developing world. Countries in South America, Central America and Southeast Asia have been smashing builds out of the park. Builds driven by a level of craftsmanship and dedication that leave westerners in their wake. Nobody shows it better than Indonesia’s Darizt Design and their latest creation, a Royal Enfield 350 speedway replica dubbed ‘Royal Dirt’. The bike itself is the resu...

IRON AWE. Kromwork’s ‘Precious Metal’ ’47 Harley Boardtracker

Written by Martin Hodgson For the best part of a century the custom motorcycle scene has been a counterculture that has traversed the globe and become a universal language for those with a love of modifying their two wheels. But with the corporate conservatives at the major manufacturers now heavily involved and a growing crowd of conformers; that intrinsic free will has come under threat. Never fear, for as long as men like Andika Pratama live and breathe then true innovation and artistic ex...
