The savage genius of SoftBank funding competitors

Venture capitalists aren’t supposed to make their portfolio companies battle to the death. There’s a long-standing but unofficial rule that investors shouldn’t fund multiple competitors in the same space. Conflicts of interest could arise, information about one startup’s strategy could be improperly shared with the other, and the companies could become suspicious of advice provided by their investors. That leads to problems down the line for VCs, as founders may avoid them if they fear the firm ...

Meet Uber’s newly promoted Chief Product Officer, Manik Gupta

Manik Gupta got his first taste of solving logistics nightmares when fresh out of college, he was delivering Palm Pilots around Singapore. He’d started a precursor to Groupon called BuyItTogether. “We were a full stack marketplace where we were also delivering the goods. That’s what caused us to not have good profit margins. Actually, zero profit margins” he recalls with a laugh. His new gig isn’t earning profits either. Uber lost nearly $1 billion last quarter. But the company sees Gupta’...

Connect The Dots Marketing

Are we seeing the bigger picture? There are three disruptive technologies that are emerging. Candidly, there are many more. Candidly, they may have already disrupted our society, but they have yet to impact brands and marketing. That will soon change. The big winner at CES this year was Amazon's Alexa technology. In short: voice. Voice as navigation. Voice as control. Voice as search. Voice as OS (operating system). However you slice it, the implications of consumers using their voice to connect...
