Her life story — which included piloting planes and driving race cars, as well as myriad honors for both business and humanitarian endeavors — was surely worthy of a movie. She died April 28 of pancreatic cancer, according to her family. Working with her husband, Bert Boeckmann, she helped to turn Galpin Motors into one of the most prom...

Porsche Santa Clarita’s Wunderground Museum Is An Amazing Sampling Of Porsche History

Why is there a hole in the floor of this Porsche dealership showroom? Oh, there's a brand-new all-carbon Porsche 935 down there. You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention. What is the Wunderground? In what was once used as underground storage for a Saturn dealership, there now exists a gorgeous mini-museum dedicated to all things Porsche. It looks exactly like Porsche Santa Clarita cut a sliver right out of Porsche's own museum in Stuttgart, transported it halfway around the world,...

Review: Riding the new Harley-Davidson Pan America

“I got to say, you’re looking older.”—Ellis “I am older.”—Sheriff Ed Tom Bell Amongst my Rushmore of cherished films, No Country For Old Men anoints the viewer with myriad lyrical gems and witticisms. The above exchange percolated to the front when, not five minutes into my arrival at Harley-Davidson’s press launch of their new Pan America 1250, an affable employee offered two-inch “Tall Risers” and a “Tallboy” seat. ‘Porsche Unseen’ Is A Rare Look Inside Porsche’s Design Studio

Porsche's design studio isn't based in some far-flung metropolitan like New York or Los Angeles or Tokyo. The company got its start in industrial design, after all, so why not keep everything in-house where it can be inspired by the depth of history and motor sport the brand is known for. That's why Porsche has kept its design studio in the quiet German town of Weissach. There's a reason Porsches look like Porsches, and could never be mistaken for another make. The whole company is so invested ...

Supervisors Janice Hahn and Sheila Kuehl co-authored a motion to create a “Zero Emission Infrastructure Plan” focused on expanding the number of charging stations countywide. “It is not surprising that the vast majority of the electric vehicles in L.A. Triple Threat: Kiyo’s three-engined land speed racer

Land speed racing has a way of inspiring outrageous engineering. The most common motivation is a relentless pursuit of outright speed. Other times, it’s driven by a desire to build something that’s truly out of this world. Shoving three bored-out Honda CB750 motors into one land speed racer is probably a little bit of both. This, in all of its 12-cylinder, 2,508cc glory, is The Galaxy. It’s the creation of California-based custom motorcycle builder and mad genius, Mitsuhiro “Kiyo” Kiyonaga, ...

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV lowers the cost of entry for some of GM’s most advanced tech

The 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV may look like a larger, slightly longer Chevrolet Bolt, but under that boxy exterior lies a whole lot of tech that’s both affordable and very advanced. With the launch of the Chevy Bolt EUV, and its available suite of advanced driver assistance systems, GM is putting both advanced driver assistance technology and electric drivetrains within reach of the masses. As part of GMs much-touted goal to introduce 30 new electric vehicles in the next four years, the company recent...

Genesis X Concept: Inside This Vibrant Showcase for “Sustainable Luxury”

ChargerHelp raises $2.75M to keep EV chargers working

The coming wave of electric vehicles will require more than thousands of charging stations. In addition to being installed, they also need to work — and today, that isn’t happening. If a station doesn’t send out an error or a driver doesn’t report it network providers might never know there’s even a problem. Kameale C. Terry, who co-founded ChargerHelp!, an on-demand repair app for electric vehicle charging stations, has seen these issues firsthand. One customer assumed that poor usage rates at ...

Baton raises $10.5M to create ‘drop zones,’ where truckers can hand off freight

In the trucking industry, “dwell and detention” times are the enemies of efficiency, profits and drivers. More than two billion hours are lost each year due to dwell —the time spent at a distribution yard or facility — and detention — the gap between when unloading or loading is supposed to begin and when it actually does. Baton, a San Francisco-based startup developed out of 8VC’s incubator program, has developed a business that it believes will solve these long-standing problems truckers. The ...

Amazon is expanding customer deliveries via electric cargo vehicle to San Francisco, making the Bay Area the second of 16 total cities the company expects to bring its Rivian-sourced EVs to in 2021.  San Francisco’s unique terrain and climate were a couple of the reasons Amazon said it chose the city for its second round of testing. Its EVs, which were designed and built in partnership with Rivian, can last up to 150 miles on a single charge.  Amazon began testing its electric delivery van ...

Double Shot: two Velocette motors power Hazan’s latest

Max Hazan is known for building impossibly elegant, hand-crafted machines. His customs ride the line between motorcycles and art so well, that they confound the usual arguments about function versus form. Hazan can play both sides of that particular coin, though. He once built a KTM 950 supermotard for personal use, aiming for a pseudo-factory look and ridability. Then a potential customer asked him to build another one just like it… and things snowballed. “He actually wanted to buy the 95...

Auto Insurers Owe California Drivers More Pandemic Refunds, State Says

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP/CBS13) — Auto insurers shortchanged California drivers on refunds ordered last year as crash rates and injuries dropped during the coronavirus pandemic, the state’s insurance regulator said Thursday. Traffic plummeted after California Gov. Gavin Newsom imposed the nation’s first stay-home order a year ago to slow the spread of the coronavirus. But insurers said dangerous driving trends have worsened even as the number of miles driven declined. Collisions dropped by 55% and...

Volkswagen, once a dabbler in electric vehicles, is now betting its future on the technology. And the new Volkswagen ID.4 — a five-passenger, fully-electric crossover with a starting price of $33,995 (before federal or state incentives) — is its first global effort to make EVs a mainstream product and part of its larger goal to become carbon neutral by 2050. California bill would require all self-driving vehicles to be zero emission by 2025

California might be the first state to give self-driving cars a deadline to electrify. In mid-February, a bill was quietly introduced into the California State Legislature that would require all autonomous vehicles to also be zero emission by 2025. Proposed Bill SB 500, which was introduced by Senator Dave Min and sponsored by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), would directly affect the nascent AV industry in applications like ride-hailing, delivery and trucking.
