Finally: The definitive movie about the custom moto scene

We’re surprised it’s taken so long. The ‘alt moto’ movement has been on fire for at least a decade, but it’s never made the jump onto the big screen. Oil In The Blood is the first film to catalog the builders, riders and artists who are driving the scene forward. It’s directed by Gareth Maxwell Roberts, a founding member of the Bike Shed club in London and the possessor of an unfeasibly large Rolodex. Gareth knows everybody in the business—and the cast list feels like a Who’s Who of the ...

Maxx Headroom: Gunn Design’s BMW flat tracker

The world of custom motorcycles is full of beautiful machines, but many of them see little mileage. While that doesn’t stop us from admiring them, we’re suckers for bikes that are designed to be ridden in anger. Right now, we’re hooked on this BMW R nineT flat track weapon, built by Dan Riley. Based in Burnsville, Minnesota, Dan’s a freelance graphic and product designer who operates as Gunn Design. The project kicked off in April last year, when Ola Stenegärd himself (then BMW Motorrad’s...

The Indian FTR 1200 revealed: specs, cost and images

Indian has finally revealed details of its production street tracker, the FTR 1200—the most hotly anticipated bike launch of recent months. The good news is that the FTR 1200 sticks fairly close to the styling lineage of the all-conquering FTR750 flat track racer, and the FTR1200 Custom concept bike we reported on last November. There’s a new 1203 cc engine that pumps out 120 hp, an under-seat tank for mass centralization, and a trellis-style steel mainframe with an aluminum rear subframe....

Custom Bikes Of The Week: 9 September, 2018

A lesson in laying (exhaust) pipe from Taiwan, a BMW K100 called ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, and a GSX-R750 hiding a little secret under its bodywork. We’re bringin’ sexy back this week. BMW K100 cafe racer by Deep Creek Cycleworks What if you really dig the lines and shapes created by the R nine T Racer, but find its protruding pistons to be a bit of an eyesore? Well, you call up the experts at Belgium’s Deep Creek Cycleworks and commission something like this: a K100-powered Racer, dubbed ‘F...

The Black Phantom: Kingston takes a leap into the dark

There are one hit wonders, and then there’s Dirk Oehlerking. The German custom builder can’t put a foot wrong, churning out hit after hit from his Kingstom Custom garage. There’s one Kingston classic BMW in particular that really left a mark on the scene: an R80RT with intriguing bodywork, dubbed ‘White Phantom.’ Dirk has now followed it up with an even more impressive, broodier sibling, just to prove that he can; meet ‘Black Phantom.’ The idea was sparked when BMW staffers Ola Stenegärd (...

AUSTRIAN SCALPS. A BMW Designer’s Take On The KTM 950 Supermoto

Custom builders and factory designers used to be at polar opposites of the spectrum. Like chalk and cheese or Harvey Weinstein and Germaine Greer. But as the custom scene has kicked down the factory doors, we’re seeing more and more crossover. The biggest victory in the past few years was Ola Stenegärd’s R nineT tour de force at BMW.The post AUSTRIAN SCALPS. A BMW Designer’s Take On The KTM 950 Supermoto appeared first on

Anglo-Saxon: A Norton Race Replica from Germany

This time last year, I was driving around Munich with BMW Motorrad’s Ola Stenegärd, when he turned to me and said he had a very special visit lined up. Shortly after, we pulled into Reinhard Neumair’s workshop, roughly 30 miles outside of the city…and my mind was blown. Now approaching sixty, Reinhard is proper old school. He has no Instagram account, Facebook page or website—but what he does have is years of experience on and off the track, immense talent, and a shop full of knee-weakening mac...

Factory Approved: The JvB-Moto BMW R nineT Scrambler

We love Jens vom Brauck’s work. The man behind Cologne-based JvB-Moto has a pair of the sharpest eyes in the business, and a knack for stylish yet functional design. But things on the JvB-Moto front have been eerily quiet of late. It turns out that Jens has been working on something very special indeed: a slimline BMW R nineT Scrambler with killer styling and paint. It’s the first time BMW Motorrad and JvB-Moto have worked together, and it’s also the first officially sanctioned R nineT Scram...
