Scientists find fast charging destroys electric vehicle batteries

For time-crunched EV drivers, fast-charging points are a boon to minimizing enforced stoppages. But scientists have found that continually using high-powered, fast-charging points can decrease the life of EV car batteries. Engineers from the University of California, Riverside (UCR) say that commercial fast-charging stations subject EV car batteries to high temperatures and resistance which can cause cells to crack, leak, and lose storage capacity. Switch eSCRAMBLER: the best-looking electric bike yet?

Electric motorcycles still seem like a brave new world in some quarters, but the technology is maturing fast and the novelty is wearing off. Shanghai-based Kiwi expat Matthew Waddick has been building street-legal electric customs for years now, and knows this well. “Electric bikes are not new anymore,” he says. “You can’t wow people just by being electric—you need to do better than that.” So Matthew’s ramped up his operations, set up a production company called Switch, and just released t...

The X-Scooter LOM solves vehicular congestion by just making mobility smaller

In almost every other industry, progress is always followed by adoption. Vinyls were followed by Cassettes, which were then dethroned by CDs, MP3 files, and finally online streaming. Progress leads to adoption, leads to optimization, followed by evolution, and then more progress. It’s a healthy cycle that allows technology and innovation to constantly provide a better experience to its end-user. Somehow that growth-cycle hasn’t seemed to make its dent in the automotive industry. We’re still, a...

US patents hit record 333,530 granted in 2019; IBM, Samsung (not the FAANGs) lead the pack

We may have moved on from a nearly-daily cycle of news involving tech giants sparring in courts over intellectual property infringement, but patents continue to be a major cornerstone of how companies and people measure their progress and create moats around the work that they have done in hopes of building that into profitable enterprises in the future. IFI Claims, a company that tracks patent activity in the US, released its annual tally of IP work today underscoring that theme: it noted that ...
