Galpin Motors’ longtime first lady Jane Boeckmann dies at 90

Jane Boeckmann, the first lady of Galpin Motors and matriarch of the Southern California auto-dealership family, has died at age 90, according to family members. Her life story — which included piloting planes and driving race cars, as well as myriad honors for both business and humanitarian endeavors — was surely worthy of a movie. She died April 28 of pancreatic cancer, according to her family. Working with her husband, Bert Boeckmann, she helped to turn Galpin Motors into one of the most prom...

Here’s What Makes The Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo So Great

Porsche recently invited FlatSixes to drive its latest creation, the all-electric Taycan 4 Cross Turismo. As great as the standard Taycan sedan is, we actually prefer the wagon version, as it gives up very little in dynamic enjoyment, while providing much more daily livability for you and your family. In addition to hauling butt, you can also haul everything you need for a long weekend away, or even a cross-country road trip for four adults and maybe even a dog. Other companies are trying to bu...

Lee Parks Design DeerSports Gloves Review

My Quest for the Perfect Riding Gloves For motorcyclists, living in San Diego is a pure blessing. The climate is pleasant and mild throughout the year with only a handful of rainy days. To the west are scenic routes by the Pacific Ocean, to the east twisty mountain roads and the desert to explore. I take full advantage of this and ride year-round, often racking up more than 15000 miles a year. Searching for good gear is a necessary habit. In my experience, many motorcycle gloves wear out afte...

Add Lightness: A wild Softail street tracker from SMCO

Suicide Machine Company build machines that go fast and turn well. Brothers Aaron and Shaun Guardado have a taste for speed, and it’s right there in their company slogan: “Fast Loud Deathproof.” So when they were invited to build a custom Harley for this year’s Born Free show in Southern California, it wasn’t likely to be a chopper. Instead, SMCO took a Softail Standard, shaved 160 pounds [72 kilos] off it, and built a rapid street tracker that’s borderline insane. “The first step was to p...

California house sales fall 41% during virus lockdown, Realtors report

The coronavirus lockdown walloped California house sales in May, resulting in a 41.4% drop in transactions from the previous year, the California Association of Realtors reported Tuesday, June 16. It was the biggest year-over-year decrease since November 2007. Median house prices, meanwhile, also fell from year-ago levels, the first such drop in eight years. The trend reflects home deals reached during the height of the lockdown in March and April when open houses shifted online and buyers and s...

Karma Revero GTE: All-Electric Performance Car Due In 2021

The Karma Revero GTE is built on the company’s new “skateboard” platform. Two versions will initially be available, with a hyper-range version on the way. Remember the Karma from a while back? It was called the Fisker Karma and Justin Bieber drove a chrome one around SoCal. The car looked nice, but it was not well-received and ended up earning a failing grade from Consumer Reports. Well, they nearly folded and Henrik Fisker eventually resigned after the company’s financial practices were ca...

Busy stadiums? Rental cars flood Dodger, Angel stadium parking lots

Empty parking lots have become a familiar sight as the coronavirus pandemic continues to ravage Southern California’s business community. With meetings, conferences and most other face-to-face activities now being conducted online or not at all, parking lots look like virtual ghost towns. But Dodger Stadium, Angel Stadium and Santa Anita Park are overflowing with thousands of rental cars that are sitting idle amid a severe downturn in travel. Hundreds of rental cars are being temporarily parke...

Too many white cars? Southern California ranks last for colorful choices

Do you think there are too many white cars in Southern California? If you own a white car, and I do, the parking-lot hunt can be a challenge. And a new study confirms my hunch: While the region’s drivers are known to like exotic cars, owners are fairly dull when it comes to color choice. White is often seen as a clean look with an eco-friendly vibe. It’s also the world’s most popular car color and is No. 1 in every region except Europe (where it’s No. 2). Note that white cars are extremely popul...

Toyota gambling with some hybrid drivers’ lives by not issuing safety recall, class-action suit claims

Jim Benning doesn’t feel safe in his 2015 Toyota Prius Liftback. While driving on a bridge over Long Beach’s Alamitos Bay last April, Benning’s brakes failed, he said, as traffic was coming to a halt at a red traffic light some 200 yards ahead. “I hit the brakes, pressed the brake all the way into the floor and nothing happened. The car didn’t slow at all,” Benning recalled, describing the incident on East Second Street near Marina Drive as “pretty terrifying.” To avoid slamming into the car ahe...

SuperStrada: Revisiting the Ducati 900 SS, 25 years on

Mike Vienne is a man obsessed by weight. His specialty is turning blunt knives into razor-sharp scalpels: or rather, improving sportbikes by stripping off everything that slows them down. He runs L.A.-based Championship Cycles, which “began from the idea that less is more. Because more is heavy, and heavy is slow.” Normally he focuses on removing parts compromised by regulations and cost restrictions. But occasionally he’ll dig deeper into a bike and come up with something completely diffe...

QUICK SILVER. Stephen Brisken’s Ducati 900 SS Cafe

Written by Andrew Jones How many 21-year-olds do you know with a killer workshop and an amazing bike collection? The answer is probably zero. That’s because – unlike other things in life – getting older seems to be a distinct benefit in the bike scene. With no more kids, years of riding experience under your belt and the mortgage paid off, many of us find ourselves in a position where those dream bikes we’ve always wanted are finally within reach. Not only that, but you also have the time to ...
