California requires all vans and trucks to drop diesel by 2045

Lawmakers in California have passed a new rule which requires all commercial trucks and vans to be zero-emission by 2045. The rule is being enforced to push some of the worst polluting methods of transport away from dirty diesel engines and toward cleaner alternatives such as electricity and hydrogen power. The rule is just the latest in a series of conditions that will need to be met before 2045. [Read: Will the Lordstown Endurance electric truck beat the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T to mark...

Volkswagen now officially runs Europe’s biggest electric car plant

One of the world’s biggest carmakers is calling time on producing internal combustion vehicles at one of its biggest factories in Germany. From now on, that factory will only produce electric cars — and it’ll claim the title of Europe’s largest electric vehicle plant. Last Friday, Volkswagen announced that its Zwickau plant has produced its last combustion engined vehicle. The last car to roll off the Zwickau production line was a Golf R station wagon with a 2.0 liter petrol engine in case you w...

Will the Lordstown Endurance electric truck beat the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T to market?

In the developing electric truck market there seem to be five key players emerging: the Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, Hummer EV, Nikola Badger, and the all-electric Ford F150. But a sixth just burst onto the scene, and its ambitious plans could see it being the first to market. Lordstown, the electric car startup that was only founded last year, unveiled its debut vehicle, called the Endurance, yesterday. What’s more, the company is planning to deliver it early next year, which is one heck of a ...

Report: Tesla Close to Choosing Austin?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made it painfully clear that Texas is his first choice when it comes to locations for a second U.S. vehicle assembly plant. The executive, disillusioned and annoyed with Silicon Valley and the general California experience, had somewhere in the central or southern U.S. on his mind when he started hunting […] The post Report: Tesla Close to Choosing Austin? appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

Nikola Motor, the Arizona startup that made its debut as a publicly traded company June 4, will open up reservations later this month for a hydrogen fuel cell electric pickup truck that was designed to compete with the Ford F-150. Elon Musk: the Tesla Cybertruck isn’t getting any smaller

In the days and weeks after Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the cybertruck — a post-apocalyptic inspired vehicle made of cold-rolled steel — there was a lot of speculation about whether it would be smaller once it actually made it to market. Production of the Cybertruck is still a long ways off. There isn’t even a factory to build the all-electric truck yet. However, Musk did provide some clarification Saturday on its size. In a tweet, Musk wrote “Reviewed design with Franz last night. Even 3% s...

Joplin, MO to Tesla: Your Truck, Right Here

A Missouri city is making a direct pitch to Tesla in the hopes of landing an assembly plant. Musk on the Hunt for Central U.S. Plant

It sounds like Texas may no longer be in the running for a potential Gigafactory. Earlier this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk implied, via tweet, a desire for the Lone Star State as the locale for his next domestic assembly plant. He’s now searching states with smaller belt buckles. The future plant would handle production […] The post Musk on the Hunt for Central U.S. Plant appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

Hot Wheels made two remote-controlled Tesla Cybertruck toys

Hot Wheels will ship you a Cybertruck long before Tesla is likely to make any deliveries on their electric retro-future wheeled trapezoid: The toy maker just unveiled two different RC Cybertruck models, including a 1:64 scale model at just $20, and a much larger 1:10 scale version for $400. These are available to pre-order now, but like most of Tesla’s cars, just because they’re introduced doesn’t mean you can go out and buy one immediately. They’re set to ship in time for the holidays, howev...

Tesla Cybertruck pre-orders have purportedly blown past the 500,000 mark

The Cybertruck was a great boon to the meme economy, but it might also do wonders for Tesla‘s revenue. According to an unofficial tally, the Elon Musk-headed company has secured over half a million pre-orders for its unorthodox electric truck, Electrek reports. Tesla hasn’t updated the numbers in a while, but Cybertruck reservation holders at Cybertruckownersclub.com estimate pre-orders have blown past the 500,000 mark. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is no stranger to sparking conversation — along with lawsuits, SEC probes, and stock fluctuations — with his social media missives. Tuesday night was no different. These Photoshops of The Tesla Cybertruck Are Just Too Good

There’s no doubt, the Tesla Cybertruck is one of the more polarizing concepts to come out of the automotive industry in a long time. It’s created some of the funniest memes out of any car since . . . well . . . since I can remember. Love it or hate it (and there are plenty of people on both sides), you’ll definitely get a kick out of some of these Photoshops and renderings fans have made. The Cybunker is the off-the-grid garage+bunker the Tesla Cybertruck deserves

I’ll admit, even though I’m not a Cybertruck evangelist, it’s really fun to see the movement it’s created, spawning funny memes, and pretty interesting products. The Cybunker by Lars Büro is certainly one of the latter.Designed for the Cybertruck patron, Tesla enthusiast, and lover of all-things-electric, the Cybunker is literally styled on the polarizing polygonal design of the pickup truck which launched a month ago. Made to work off the grid, the bunker comes with a roof of solar panels that ...

Cybertruck Headed for Medium-duty Classification?

There’s many unknown aspects of the Tesla Cybertruck, not least of which is its curb weight, but a recent letter to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reveals that Elon Musk’s retro-futuristic brainchild might have no business engaging in a one-on-one with the Ford F-150. Cybertruck Showboating Calls Model’s Visibility Into Question

Ford says it has nothing to prove to Tesla in F-150 vs Cybertruck tow battle

It was the challenge heard around the electric vehicle world. And now it seems, the Ford F-150 versus Tesla Cybertruck tow battle that we were all ready for, probably won’t happen. A quick recap: Tesla CEO Elon Musk poked the figurative Dearborn, Michigan bear in the middle of the company’s Cybertruck unveiling when he played a video of the futuristic electric truck pulling an F-150 in what was pitched as a head-to-head contest. Many were quick to question whether it was a fair fight, incl...

Elon Musk Explains the Manufacturing Reason Behind Why the Cybertruck is All Flat Planes

All jokes aside, the Tesla Cybertruck has racked up roughly 187,000 orders since its launch last week. (Truth be told, my wife and I are discussing whether we'll add ourselves to the order list, but I'll get into that in another entry.) And now a design detail that we'd have preferred to hear during the launch presentation has come to light. From Musk himself: That freaking explains a lot, and I wish Musk had stated that up front! YD Talks: A design critique of the Tesla Cybertruck

A whole day (and a half) after I called the Cybertruck a Toblerone on wheels, here’s a more detailed breakdown of the Tesla’s launch of the new Cybertruck, and why (as a designer, and not a customer) I still don’t like it. My opinion, if definitely more nuanced, still pretty much remains unchanged in its essence. The most popular professionally circulated adjective to describe the Tesla Cybertruck has been ‘polarized’. It’s perhaps the most appropriate term to use. You don’t appear for or against...

Tesla Cybertruck reservations hit 146,000

Tesla has received 146,000 reservations to order the Tesla Cybertruck, pulling in some $14.6 million in deposits just two days after the company’s CEO Elon Musk unveiled the futuristic and angled vehicle. Reservations require a $100 refundable deposit. How many of those deposits will convert to actual orders for the truck, which is currently priced between $39,900 and $69,900, is impossible to predict. And there will likely be plenty of speculation over the next two years. Production of the t...

Here’s why the Tesla Cybertruck has its crazy look

Elon Musk revealed the Cybertruck last night, saying it looks like nothing else on the market. That’s true, but the Cybertruck shares several key features with an unlikely pickup — the first-generation Honda Ridgeline. Both the Cybertruck and Honda Ridgeline are built differently from standard pickups. They employ a unibody design, much like what’s used in most passenger vehicles. Instead of a body sitting on a frame, the Cybertruck and Ridgeline are built around what is essentially a metal cage...
