Cake brings a Swedish take on e-motorcycle design to the US

Cake has crafted the Swedish edition of electric motorcycle design starting in the dirt. The Stockholm-based mobility startup’s debut, the Kalk OR, is a 150-pound, battery-powered two-wheeler engineered for agile off-road riding and available in a street-legal version. In appearance, Cake’s Kalk has a minimalist stance and doesn’t evoke “motorcycle” in any conventional sense. That was intentional, according to the company’s CEO, Stefan Ytterborn — a design aficionado and serial founder — who w...

On the Front Range with Brigitta

Saturday, May 23It was high time for Brigitta, my '87 BMW R80, to get some exercise! We would end up riding perhaps 60 miles or so, meandering the county roads to the NE of the cesspool that is the Metro Denver area. The day was warm and mostly sunny with incoming weather clouds evident to the west as the afternoon moved towards evening.First stop was Saint Isidore Church along the I-70 Super Slab near the small farming town of Watkins.  I was hoping for a nice view of the Front Range Mountains bu...

Winner Takes It All: Rod Motorcycles’ Bullet 500

David Zima isn’t a man to shy away from a challenge. When news of a custom build-off popped up in the Czech Republic, he didn’t really have time to build anything—or spare money for a donor. But he jumped in headfirst anyway. Build-off contests are everywhere these days, and this one was run by the Czech importer of Royal Enfield. But it had a catch—builders had to buy their own Enfield donor bike. Fortunately there was an attractive discount on offer, and as the prize, whoever won the contes...

How It Works: Electric Vehicle Skateboard Chassis

Electric vehicles offer automakers new ways to put a car together, and one of those is with a skateboard chassis. The driveline components are integrated into it, and the battery becomes part of the floor -- making it easier to assemble and to use in as many vehicles as possible. Find out more in my "How It Works" column at the National Post (Driving.ca). [Author: Jil McIntosh]

Danger Zone: Federal Moto’s Kawasaki GPz1100

The year is 1986, and Tom Cruise is playing Maverick in Top Gun—flying an F-14 Tomcat by day and tearing around on a Kawasaki GPZ900R by night. If you fell in love with that film and the bike ridden by its motorcycle-mad star, you’re not alone. “We all know that movie,” says Michael Muller of Federal Moto. “And we always knew that when Federal Moto built its first custom sportbike, we’d need the beefiest bad boy of the 80s: the GPz1100.” The GPz1100 was the older, bigger brother of the Ni...

Here’s how many cyclists it takes to charge a Tesla as fast as a Supercharger

How many cyclists does it take to charge a Tesla? No, this isn’t the start to a bad joke, it’s a legitimate question. It’s also one that Finnish record breaker show Ennätystehdas (or The Record Factory) managed to answer. Whether you actually should charge your Tesla using captive cyclists is another question entirely, though. [Read: Engineer finds Tesla Model 3 is secretly equipped with hardware for powering homes] Given how little power the average cyclist generates compared to cars and how bi...

3 possible scenarios for restoring public transport after COVID-19

The Dutch bike-transit system should be our guide to not only encourage public transport use, but to also make it more efficient and attractive by offering higher frequency service with even better coverage. How is that possible? As we seem to be reaching the light at the end of the COVID-19 quarantine tunnel, many of us question what this might mean for mobility, and particularly, for public transport. The lockdown has generally had the same impact all around the world: car journeys fell 50–80%...

Scale AI releases free lidar dataset to power self-driving car development

High quality data is the fuel that powers AI algorithms. Without a continual flow of labeled data, bottlenecks can occur and the algorithm will slowly get worse and add risk to the system. It’s why labeled data is so critical for companies like Zoox, Cruise and Waymo, which use it to train machine learning models to develop and deploy autonomous vehicles. That need is what led to the creation of Scale AI, a startup that uses software and people to process and label image, lidar and map dat...
