Square and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. Joshua Roberts/Reuters Jack Dorsey tried to give a seat on Twitter's board of directors to Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai in 2016, according to the Wall Street Journal. The idea was met with opposition internally, as was the idea to add civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson, the Journal reports. Dorsey and Mckesson appear to be good friends, and Dorsey has admired Yousafzai for several years, calling her the person who inspires him the most in a 2015...

The Los Angeles Dodgers finish the job with the 2020 World Series Championship

If you’re living in Los Angeles this week, you’re not sleeping – whether you’re a Dodger fan or not. If you love the boys in blue, then watching game 6 was a place we knew too well. And when it was all over, you probably jumped out of your seat and screamed loud enough for the neighbors to hear. If you’re a fan of any other team, then hopefully, you were able to get some sleep with the constant reminder that the Dodgers won with every firework in the city going off. The Dodgers playing the Tampa...

Qualtrics CEO Ryan Smith is buying majority stake in the Utah Jazz for $1.6B

The Utah Jazz, an NBA basketball team based in Salt Lake City, announced today that Qualitrics CEO and co-founder Ryan Smith was buying a majority stake in the team along other properties. ESPN is reporting the deal is worth $1.6 billion. Smith can afford it. He sold Qualtrics, which is based in Provo, Utah, in 2018 to SAP for $8 billion just before the startup was about to go public. Earlier this year, SAP announced plans to spin out Qualtrics as public company. In addition to The Jazz...

Editor’s note: This is the Wednesday Oct. 26 edition of the Purple & Bold Lakers newsletter. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. On a championship team, everyone’s a winner. But some win more than others. The 2019-20 Lakers followed through on their postseason campaign to “Leave A Legacy,” but a title burnishes some resumes in particular, adding context to how we view their careers and accomplishments. What Minnesota pro team will be next to break its championship drought?

Minnesota has, by my count, six major professional sports teams: the Vikings, Twins, Wild, Wolves, Lynx and Minnesota United. The word "major" is subjective, but as a baseline (to me) it means that the league to which those teams belong must be the top pro league in the United States and that its athletes must be able to make a living solely by playing in that league. When it comes to winning championships, the ledger is lopsided. The Lynx have won four of them in the last decade — 2011, 2013, 2...

Rams watch Lakers and Dodgers win championships and think, ‘It’s our turn’

The Lakers got the NBA championship. The Dodgers got the World Series. And the Rams? They got the message. “I had a lot of friends text last night, joking around, saying, ‘It’s (time for) the Rams. You’ve got to hit the trifecta,’ ” Rams kicker Kai Forbath said Wednesday, the day after the Dodgers beat the Tampa Bay Rays to wrap up L.A.’s second sports title in 16 days. “A little added pressure,” Forbath said. “But that would be just amazing for the city.” Forbath, a Santa Monica native and West...
