Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Monday, Dec. 28, that teachers are part of the group that could receive the next wave of the coronavirus vaccine in California’s distribution plan. Health care workers and first responders were the first Californians to receive the vaccine in a process dictated by state public health officials.  As more of their ranks are vaccinated locally, Newsom discussed the “next phase” of the roll out. Vaccinations were set to begin at nursing homes in California on Monday, N...

Nearly 500 COVID deaths in L.A. County over holiday weekend if new fatality numbers are confirmed

Nearly 500 people in Los Angeles County died of COVID-19 over the long holiday weekend if the latest reports of coronavirus-related fatalities are confirmed — a development that would also bring the total number of COVID-related deaths since the start of the pandemic to just under 10,000, county public health officials said Monday, Dec. 28. Adding to that grim news was the fact that 6,914 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized in L.A. County on Monday, another record for daily hospitalizations, acc...

"Successfully making art requires accepting yourself, in Mr. Koons’s philosophy, so that you can pursue your interests without shame."

"'Everything about your past is perfect,' he says. 'Everything up to this moment about you is spectacular.' ... I found myself mindlessly nodding along, as he compares an ashtray that he remembers loving as a child, with a reclining woman holding her legs aloft, to Michelangelo’s 'Pietà.' 'How can that be any less than this masterpiece by Michelangelo?' he says. 'It’s equal.'... He asks himself, 'What have I been pulled to? What have the interests been lately?' He believes this will work for you...

Photos: Looking back at 2020, via the lens of staff photographer Brittany Murray

Saying 2020 has been a difficult year is almost cliche now, which is sad. For far too many people, 2020 has truly been their worst year. For others, 2020 has been a minor inconvenience and shown that we all should be thankful for what we have. Personally, I am thankful for many things, one of which being my career. I’ve been a photojournalist for 22 years and I can honestly say that 99 out of 100 days I love it, a pretty good percentage by any standards. Sacramento Kings guard Buddy Hield. l...

I was an early Erasmus scholar, and I grieve for what British students have lost | Julian Baggini

My time in Europe transformed my outlook; those who think Brexit is all about trade deals ignore what else was at stakeThe prime minister offered the country a “feast” this Christmas but many of us still haven’t been able to digest it. The truth is it was never very appetising, not so much an oven-ready treat as a cheap ready meal. Boris Johnson’s trade deal does not bring “glad tidings of great joy” but final confirmation that a special relationship has been turned into a purely transactional o...

In 1896, a French Cartoonist Predicted Our Socially-Distanced Zoom Holiday Gatherings

Imagine that, this time last year, you’d heard that your family’s holiday gatherings in 2020 would happen on the internet. Even if you believed such a future would one day come, would you have credited for a moment that kind of imminence? Yet our videoconference toasts this season were predicted — even rendered in clear and reasonably accurate detail — more than 120 years ago. “My wife is visiting her aunt in Budapest, my older daughter is studying dentistry in Melbourne, my younger daughter i...
