Want Americans to graduate college? Make it affordable.December 29, 2020 at 2:44 PM Many of the fastest-growing jobs in the U.S. require a postsecondary education, while college tuition rates continue to climb. Recent research finds that making college more affordable improves bachelor degree attainment. Aid recipients who benefit most are students from historically underrepresented groups. The benefits bestowed by a college degree are well-known. Degrees open access to job opportunities and, with them, economic stability. The average earning potential of a college graduate is...Tags: Education, Finance, Youth, America, Debt, Society, Mit, Teaching, United States, Innovation, Community, Nebraska, Department Of Education, Foundation, Urban Institute, Baum This is what it’s like to be in the shoes of a medical studentDecember 29, 2020 at 3:00 PM The student is last on the list. Each writer’s process is a personal relationship between them and the page—and the desk, room, chair, pens or pencils, typewriter or laptop, turntable, CD player, streaming audio… you get the idea. The kind of music suitable for listening to while writing (I, for one, cannot write to music with lyrics) varies so widely that it encompasses everything and nothing. Silence can be a kind of music, too, if you listen closely.

Like Theodore Roosevelt’s Focused AdviceDecember 29, 2020 at 8:49 AM One of my colleagues at Georgetown recently pointed me toward a 1902 letter that Theodore Roosevelt sent to his son Kermit, who at the time was at boarding school.
Here’s the passage that caught my attention:
“I am delighted at all the accounts I receive of how you are doing at Groton. You seem to be enjoying yourself and are getting on well. I need not tell you to do your best to cultivate ability for concentrating your thought on whatever work you are given to do—you will need it in Latin esp...Tags: College, Uncategorized, Kermit, Georgetown, Theodore Roosevelt, Groton 91 people like this. No matter who said it, “the sentiment… rings true,” writes Michelle Lavery, “for researchers in all disciplines from particle physics to ecopsychology.” As Feynman discovered during his many years of teaching, it could be “the motto of all professional communicators,” The Guard...Tags: Google, Elsa, Science, Instagram, Film, California, College, San Francisco, History, Albert Einstein, Einstein, Feynman, Charlie Chaplin, Universal Studios, Facebook Twitter, Chaplin 79 people like this. All the great movies have a few memorable scenes; Pulp Fiction is made of nothing but. More than a quarter-century ago, that film’s release turned a young video-store clerk-turned-auteur called Quentin Tarantino into a household name. Cinephiles today still argue about which is the most memorable among its scenes, and only the most contrarian could fail to consider the dance. It comes early in the film, when the hitman Vincent Vega takes his bo...Tags: Google, Facebook, Film, College, Dance, Uma Thurman, Jon Stewart, John, Batman, Quentin Tarantino, James Corden, Seoul, Vanity Fair, John Travolta, Tarantino, Travolta 61 people like this.
