Persian book festival coming to Irvine

When Bahareh Hedayat wanted to find immersion classes in Persian language and culture for her young children, she couldn’t find any close to home. So the Irvine resident created her own language immersion and cultural center. The non-profit, Bahar Kids, now is gearing to host its second annual Persian Children’s Book Festival on Feb. 24. 8 in 10 LAUSD seniors apply to college. Here’s the campuses they chose, new study shows

By Esmeralda Fabián Romero, LA School Report Eight out of 10 LA Unified seniors applied to college, and nearly two-thirds applied to at least one four-year college, according to a new report —  the first in a series examining Los Angeles students’ college-going data. Those figures, for the Class of 2017, show that Los Angeles seniors apply at similar rates as their peers nationally. But they outpace their peers in the number of applications they submit. The study is the first by a research partn...

How off-campus college living boosts local poverty rates

The “starving student” is more than a stereotype of a challenging slice of one’s life. College kids are a noteworthy economic force for a campus and its surrounding community — both good and bad. Ponder a recent Census Bureau report that shows how coed’s off-campus living boosts local poverty rates. When the census compiles the traditional poverty rate, it tabulates those among the civilian population living on less than poverty incomes. They are older than 15 and not “institutionalized” — those...

How to Use Psychedelic Drugs to Improve Mental Health: Michael Pollan’s New Book, How to Change Your Mind, Makes the Case

The history of research on psychedelic drugs is so sensational that more sober-minded experiments (so to speak) often get obscured by the hip, the weird, and the nefarious, the latter including secret CIA and Army testing of LSD and other drugs as a means of psychological warfare and “enhanced interrogation.” These experiments inadvertently led to Ken Kesey’s infamous “Acid Tests” in Northern California. On the other side of the country, Harvard psychologist Timothy Leary used questionab...

The University of California’s Board of Regents agreed Wednesday to defer a vote on a posible tuition and fees hike following pleas from students and lawmakers urging them to hold off. UC President Janet Napolitano recommended the board wait until its May meeting to vote on a 2.7 percent hike for California students. The increase would mean an extra $342 in tuition and student-services fees beginning in the fall, raising the annual tab to $12,972. “This will give us time to make our case to the ...

Despite legalization, California colleges stick to their marijuana bans

By Nico Savidge, EdSource Students at UC San Diego don’t need to go far if they want to take part in California’s new recreational marijuana market: Torrey Holistics, a dispensary that sells cannabis to anyone over 21, is the next exit up Interstate 5 from the university. But those students shouldn’t plan to bring their purchases back to their dorm rooms, or anywhere else on campus. UC San Diego — along with every other University of California System institution, all of the California State Uni...

Free speech is endangered on college campuses nationwide, but for the 10th straight year the number of campuses with the most-restrictive policies declined, says a report released this week by a nonprofit. Overall, California campuses have less-restrictive policies when compared with schools nationwide. According to Philadelphia-based Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, or FIRE, 32 percent of the 461 colleges and universities surveyed maintain “severely restrictive” speech codes. By c...
