The Texan #9 - Matt Baker cover

Matt Baker The Texan v1 #9, 1950 - One of Matt Baker's busier western covers, a cowboy lands a devastating punch on his opponent. Below the masthead, figures and other visual elements fills the entire space. Still, the layout maintains balance and clarity. A small decorative inset on the lower right alludes to another story, but Baker's sizing and placement somewhat infringes on the larger [Author: Ted F]

‘Force Majeure’ Remake Adds Will Ferrell and the Directors of ‘The Way Way Back’

Hollywood remakes of great foreign films have been common for ages and will always exist as long as most audiences avoid subtitles like the plague. So director Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure getting remade with an all-star cast of comedic talent isn’t surprising. All I can say is “Good luck remaking one of the darkest and most singular comedies of the past 20 years or so.” Could directors Jim Rash and Nat Faxon and superstar Will Ferrell be up to the task? We shall see. Deadline has the news ...

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter

I watched this in the context of the regular “Movie Nights” I organize at work — I pick a theme (this time was of course “Halloween”) and then create a survey for the team to pick the movie they’d most like to watch (choices were between this, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Scream, Creepshow, and Trick ‘R Treat). I had an absolute blast watching it, but it was in a fantastic setting: a large room with a bunch of people, drinking beers and eating popcorn, and having a fun time commenting at...

I liked watching this, even though I found it to be trash at the same time. It’s fully in the b-movie camp, with low-budget effects, but it manages to have fun with that, all the while being really gory — more than I was expecting — and with a premise that sounds pretty dumb and simple at first, but ends up being more creepy than it should be (I think in part because of the odd and frantic performance by the actor playing the clown/killer). Not for everyone, and not for every moods, but can be ...

Yogi Berra is purported to have said…

“Always go to other people’s funerals; otherwise they won’t go to yours.” This morning I went to the funeral for Roger, W8ZRF, who passed away about a week ago. When I got to the church, I looked around and was disappointed that only one other ham—Margaret, W8MAG— was there. During the homily, the priest mentioned Roger’s great interest in amateur radio. If you read the obituary, you realize how much amateur radio shaped Roger’s life. After the mass, Roger’s son also offered a remembrance, and r...

I really didn’t know much about this movie, but came across it on Netflix, and it seemed to be rated highly. It was a very pleasant surprise, as it ended up being quite good — certainly one of the better movies I watched in October. Great spooky premise — a haunted mirror — with an interesting buildup (trying to stop it from happening again through a series of contraptions) and then payoff. Really enjoyed this.

#RHOA Kandi Burruss Explains Why Kenya Moore “Popped Up” During Filming…

NEWSFLASH!!! Kandi Burruss of The Real Housewives of Atlanta apparently has a plan to work Kenya Moore back into the show. As exclusively revealed back in May, Moore’s peach was snatched shortly after the season 10 reunion (click HERE if you missed that), but she recently showed up during a taped event. While ‘team twirl’ translated the sighting as a sign that Kenya was back, the truth of the matter is that the former beauty queen needed some free press so Kandi and fellow cast member Cynthia...

J.J. Abrams Seeks Megadeal With Studios to Do Whatever the Heck He Wants

J.J. Abrams has considerably clout in Hollywood – his name is attached to Lost, Star Wars, Star Trek, and more. But as the old adage goes, you can never have too much of a good thing. Abrams is now being courted by major studios – Disney, Universal and more – in a quest to land a megadeal that would give him Steven Spielberg-like power to do pretty much whatever the hell he wants. According to Variety, the major movers and shakers in Hollywood all want to get into the J.J. Abrams business. T...

Bone Tomahawk

This is a hell of a movie. I’d been wanting to watch it for quite some time, and had heard that it gets really crazy at some point, and yup, that final sequence is just, well, terrifying. I really love westerns, so I was first of all happy to have one that touches on the horror genre. It also does a nice job of slowly building towards what we witness towards the end — which is truly terrifying, both in terms of something you see happen, as well as seeing the remains of something they’ve done (I...

The Ritual

Throughout the month of October I ended up watching quite a few Netflix Original films, something I hadn’t really done much of in the past, and this was another one I really enjoyed. Hiking in the woods is already a great premise for a horror film, and here they manage to really build it up nicely, to then cap it off with a great creepy payoff that isn’t really what you’d expect. Well worth watching.

Ike Barinholtz on Making His Directorial Debut With ‘The Oath’ [Interview]

Chicago native Ike Barinholtz has made a career out of scene stealing, from his earliest days as an improv performer with Improv Olympic and Second City (among others) and a cast member on MadTV in the early 2000s to bigger television roles in Eastbound & Down to The Mindy Project. In more recent years, Barinholtz landed sizable supporting roles in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, Suicide Squad, Snatched, the Netflix film Bright, and a very funny turn in Blockers earlier this year. News Post: Equine Prophecy Syndrome

Tycho: It’s pretty rare that Gabe and I can just, like… sit down and play games.  It’s “the cobbler’s son,” right?  But because I’m trying to be humane to myself after the Aus flight I ended up over at his place yesterday afternoon playing Red Dead, which is ridiculous.  It’s just a ridiculous game.  I think they’ve internalized some troubling ideas about equine health.  He asked me if I was gonna grab it when I got home, but I don’t know yet.  Maybe for the multi.  Right now I’m doing something...
