Shazam!

Thanks to a special Fandango offer, KC and I got to see Shazam! last night. It’s a fun movie, thanks largely to the outstanding performance of Zachary Levi as the 15-year-old pretending to be an adult superhero. He does an amazing job capturing the combination of adolescent swagger and uncertainty. (Asher Angel plays Billy Batson as the teen version.) But it’s also a very boy-focused film, with the characters of the various mothers and sisters inconsistent or not well-developed. I [...]

The Karate Kid: The Classic Illustrated Storybook

The Karate Kid: The Classic Illustrated Storybook is the newest Pop Classic from Quirk Books. I previously talked about Buffy the Vampire Slayer: A Picture Book, from the same line. Avildsen, and this book is adapted by Rebecca Gyllenhaal and illustrated by Kim Smith, who has done all the titles in the [...]

Adventure Comics #427 - Alex Nino art

Adventure Comics v1 #427, 1973 - A young woman tries to take over Captain Fear's ship, just as they come under attack. Compared to previous issues, Alex Nino's art is a tad more restrained. His best moment occurs on page 2, as two large ships collide on the open sea (see interior page below). Sensitively drawn, the imagery overall meets expectations. ‘Midsommar’ is Not Like ‘Hereditary’, But It is ‘The Wizard of Oz’ for Perverts, According to Ari Aster

If you’re expecting the new Ari Aster film Midsommar to be anything like his previous horror movie Hereditary, you should check yourself. Instead, Aster suggests the movie is akin to The Wizard of Oz for perverts. Who wouldn’t want to see that? Midsommar One of my most anticipated movies of the year is Midsommar, the latest from Ari Aster, direct...

The Little Guys

The Little Guys has an odd topic and message for a children’s book. When I first heard of the concept, that tiny little creatures — they look rather like beards with acorn caps and stick arms and legs, so they have no analogue in the real world — teamed up together, could do anything, I thought that that sounded like a typical, encouraging read about teamwork. That is not this book. As the promotion asks, But as they begin to [...]
