Meet a Local Cartoonist: A Chat with Alexandra Bowman

by Mike Rhode My friend Bruce Guthrie recently attended a political cartooning event at Georgetown University featuring Matt Wuerker and KAL, which I had to skip due to a scheduling conflict. Afterwards, he made a point of introducing me via email to Alexandra Bowman, the student political cartoonist who organized it. In keeping with our attempts to learn more about local cartoonists, I asked if she would answer our usual interview questions.  Alexandra did so directly upon finishing her final e...

Cells at Work! Code Black Volume 1

Cells at Work! Code Black is a gender-swapped spin-off of the original Cells at Work! manga with a more adult approach. The red blood cell, who serves as the reader’s guide through the body, is here an uncertain young man who doesn’t like his job. The protective white blood cell is now a woman (with a ridiculously impractical costume that’s missing its front, so copious cleavage is always on display). And the topics covered are those happening in the body [...]

Fate/Grand Order: Zettai Majuu Sensen Babylonia Episode 11 Impression

On this episode, Ritsuka's party attacks Quetzalcoatl and targets her temple. Meanwhile, Ritsuka investigates Quetzalcoatl's true intentions. The servant action battle between Ritsuka's servants and Quetzalcoatl is cool. But, at the same time, I can't resist to notice that the battle animation seems to be quite off on details. An example is Quetzalcoat's green nail colors is not shown and then randomly shown. Although, the action is still nice regardless. Also, it was cool to see Ritsuka go out...

Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode Oracle Episode 11 Impression

On this episode, Ash altered the present and discovers the new Deuman race existence. Later, Ash meets Xiao and gets sent to the past to re-fight Elder with Zeno. So it was interesting to see the Deuman race being introduced and some details about the time alterations. Also, the time travel action re-fighting Elder is cool. Other than that, I can't wait to see our male lead get directly involved on defeating Luther and restore ARKS from his corruption. Now what's going to happen next? I definite...

News Post: Duplicants

Tycho: It seemed like there was a gift opportunity there, a strikingly rare window, but no because of who he is as a person. Kiko and I are going to start playing Dust or other wargames on our Thursday afternoon streams soon, that’s essentially how I want to spend my time these days, and I wonder if Gabe will pop in sometime with his Soviet menace.  He was talking to me about a winter camo scheme he was gonna do, and implied very strongly that it was all my fault, which I don’t disagree with.  ...

Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld Episode 10 Impression

On this episode, Asuna reunites with vegetable Kirito and receives hostility from Alice. Later, Asuna explains the outside situation to the Integrity Knights leaders. Whoa, it was adorable to see vegetable Kirito react a lot more when he saw Asuna. Also, seeing Alice being hostile on Asuna and then starts some sort of rivalry for our male lead is interesting. Other than that, the main plot development got really nice because of the Integrity Knights finally becoming aware of the outside real wor...

A Sh*t Ton Of Comedians Bring You Christmas Magic In One Epic Song

Courtesy Comedy Gives Back Example lyric: ON THE TWELFTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS I FINALLY TOOK A PEE A lot of comedians showed up for this doozy of a holiday diddy And they did not disappoint. This is a Christmas song we can get behind. Because on the one hand Christmas songs are beautiful and wonderful, and they make us pause and think and appreciate the beauty of life and togetherness and all that crap, but on the other hand they are a bald-faced lie peddling a myth of a bygone era in the s...

The NASA Engineer Behind The Farting Glitter Bomb Is Back At It

It’s better and fartier than ever! As each year comes to a close, usually we take the last few weeks to reflect on the prior twelve months and everything that transpired. This year, though, I think we’ve all concluded that 2019 was a mostly a gigantic nightmare that we’d rather not cast our minds back to without a very large, very strong glass of alcohol in hand. So don’t worry, I’m not going to ask you to think back to any of the events of 2019, you’re safe. I am, however, going to ask yo...

The Bear Necessities Makes “The Fight to the Death” the Best ‘His Dark Materials’ Episode Yet

With “The Fight to the Death,” His Dark Materials for the first time goes into the unknown — and I’m not making that Frozen-related pun because Lyra and co. find themselves deep in the arctic tundra. This is mostly unknown territory for His Dark Materials adaptation-wise; 2007’s The Golden Compass never got this far in its adaptation of Philip Pullman’s novel, opting to end on a triumphant note with Lyra’s victory in Bolvanger. But this is, as people say, where shit goes down. But His Dark Mate...

‘Avenue 5’ Trailer: Josh Gad Invites You on a “Luxury” Space Experience

Josh Gad is not the best billionaire salesman, but he does his awkward, creepy best in the latest Avenue 5 trailer, which plays like a very bad advertisement for Gad’s luxury space cruise. Sherlock Unlocked: Little-Known Facts About the World’s Greatest Detective

Sherlock Unlocked: Little-Known Facts About the World’s Greatest Detective, by Daniel Smith, is a lovely little gift book. It’s nice for pick-up-and-put-down reading, or dipping in and out, with 117 chapters in under 200 pages on a variety of topics. (Obviously, most topics get a few paragraphs; many of them are reminiscent of short blog posts.) Content ranges across the origins and inspirations of the characters to bits of Arthur Conan Doyle’s life, with diversions into spinoffs (mostly on the ...

Watch ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Elevator Fight Scene Rehearsal with Chris Evans

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of the best sequels in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directors Anthony & Joe Russo brought Captain America into political thriller territory that called back to classic movies like The Conversation, Three Days of the condor, All the President’s Men, The Manchurian Candidate and more. Despite pulling from classic thrillers and master filmmakers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier still has that comic book spectacle and style, and one of the most satis...

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is #1 on Hot 100 After 25 Years & Also Her 19th #1 Hit

Christmas came a bit early for Mariah Carey. For the first time ever, “All I Want for Christmas” is No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after 25 years! Carey’s holiday album “Merry Christmas” was first released way back in 1994, and since then, the highest any of her Christmas songs have ever been near the top of the Hot 100 was back in December 2017 when the same song was ranked No. 3. In addition to that amazing feat, “All I Want for Christmas” is the first holiday No. 1. on the Hot 100 in over SIX...

‘Legends of the Hidden Temple’ Revival is Coming to Quibi – and This Time, It’s For Adults

One of these days, we’re all going to have to face reality and come to grips with the fact that Quibi is a real, actual thing and not just an elaborate joke. Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman‘s mobile-only platform, which will distribute “quick bites” of entertainment in episodic chunks that don’t run longer than ten minutes each, already has the support of every major Hollywood studio, but now might have the support of ’90s kids who grew up watching Nickelodeon. That’s right: a Legends of the...
