Valor #5 - Wally Wood art & cover, Al Williamson art

Wally Wood Valor v1 #5, 1955 - Wally Wood delivers his second outstanding cover for this series. A desert scene shows an oncoming attack while an army awaits patiently. The details on the camel heads are as impressive as the central figure. Wood's opening story, set in ancient Rome, shows a comparably fine effort (see interior reprint page below). Uplet: The Easiest Way to Upload Images to Instagram from a Mac

Unless you’re using a mobile device, Instagram’s upload options are very limited. While many folks use the mobile app as their only method of posting to Instagram, artists such as yours truly, want a way to easily share our images directly from our desktop / laptop machines. Up until recently, I relied on Flume to upload image files directly from my Mac. Sadly, Flume is now abandonware, having its last update in mid-July 2019. Digging around for alternatives to Flume, I discovered Uplet, by El...

‘Dual’ Will See Karen Gillan Fight Her Own Clone in a Court-Ordered Trial-by-Combat

Riley Stearns, the director of Faults and The Art of Self-Defense, is set to make a satirical sci-fi thriller – and he’s lined-up an interesting cast. In Stearns’ upcoming Dual, a woman who undergoes a cloning procedure – and lives to regret it. The film will star Karen Gillan and Aaron Paul, with Jesse Eisenberg set to make “an appearance.” How’s this for a premise: in Dual, “After receiving a terminal diagnosis, a woman (Karen Gillan) opts for a cloning procedure to ease her loss on her fr...

Jiong Ma with Russian Characteristics

This an old poster I never got around to posting before: What makes the movie title unique is that it incorporates Cyrillic letters into its Chinese characters. I’d never seen this kind of thing before, so I liked it. I’m no expert on Russian, but I can recognize Д and Э in there! Anyway, the movie is called 囧妈 in Chinese, Lost in Russia in English. It’s part of a “Jiong series” of comedies which I won’t go into but are easy to find. The post Jiong Ma with Russian Characteristics ...

‘Social Distance’ Series Coming to Netflix From ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Team

Note to Hollywood: maybe, just maybe, we don’t need social distancing-based entertainment right now. Or ever, really. But that won’t stop Netflix, who are moving forward with a “quarantine anthology series” from Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan. The series is called Social Distance, and promises to focus on the “new, bizarre, bewildering reality we are all experiencing.” Whether we like it or not, we’re bound to get more than a few coronavirus/social distancing-themed movies and T...

‘One Day at a Time’ is Making an Animated Episode During the Coronavirus Shutdown

One Day at a Time has managed to survive cancellation and network changes, with the beloved sitcom getting saved by Pop TV after getting dropped by Netflix. But even the acclaimed reimagining of Norman Lear’s classic sitcom couldn’t avoid the industry-wide production shutdowns amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Like all other live-action Hollywood productions, filming on the current fourth season of One Day at a Time was suspended in mid-March. But the ever-resilient family comedy is com...

Streaming films are temporarily eligible for Oscars, no theatrical run required

Widespread theatrical closures have forced the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to loosen the rules around which films qualify for Oscars. This might not seem like much of a breakthrough in a year when Netflix got the most Oscar nominations of any studio, and when the streamer’s original films ultimately walked away with two Oscars. However, in order to compete in Best Picture and other categories, films must be screened commercially for at least seven days in a Los Angeles theater, e...

California Movie Theaters Won’t Reopen For Months, Even as Other States Ease Restrictions

With some states – we’re looking at you, Georgia and Texas – a-okay with reopening movie theaters this month, curiosity has cropped up regarding when other states might follow. And according to California Governor Gavin Newsom, don’t expect any California movie theaters to reopen anytime soon. Newsom says the stage to reopen movie theaters is “months, not weeks” away. Look, we all miss movie theaters. Even someone like me, who has come to loathe the inconsiderate crowds of talkers and cell p...

‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Featurette Takes You Behind the Scenes of the Ahsoka vs. Maul Lightsaber Fight

If you aren’t watching Star Wars: The Clone Wars, you probably missed one of the best lightsaber fights in the franchise’s history in last Friday’s episode. Ahsoka Tano and Maul clashed on Mandalore, and since executive producer and supervising director Dave Filoni knew that confrontation was a big deal for fans, he wanted to make sure the lightsaber fight was taken to the next level. Details About Quentin Tarantino’s Long-Abandoned Vega Brothers Film Revealed by Michael Madsen

Once upon a time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino had dreams of combining the worlds of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction into The Vega Brothers. Michael Madsen‘s character in Reservoir Dogs and John Travolta‘s character in Pulp Fiction both had the same last name – Vega – and Tarantino very much wanted to team the two actors up for a prequel movie (it would have to be a prequel, since both Vega Brothers die in their respective films). Alas, it never came to be. Tarantino has dropped tidbits about...

Academy Alters Oscars Rules: Streaming Films Eligible, Sound Categories Combined, and More

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ board of governors met this morning and voted to make some important changes to eligibility requirements for the 2021 Oscars ceremony. The biggest of these is that the board has nixed the requirement that films need to play in a Los Angeles theater for at least one week for a qualifying run – now, films that were released digitally without playing in theaters at all (like Trolls World Tour) are eligible for Oscars. Read more about the new changes...
