Glamping in Shanghai

I’ve been meaning to go “camping” in Shanghai for a while, knowing that whatever activity I engaged in would probably be pretty different from what I know as “camping” in the USA. Well, on the October holiday, I finally did it… my first glamping experience. (And yes, they even call it “glamping” here in Shanghai, too… 精致露营 in Chinese.) The campgrounds are located within a large park on Changxing Island 长兴岛 (near Chongming Island 崇明岛 ) called 长兴岛郊野公园 (Changxing Dao Jiaye Gongyuan)...

‘The Simpsons’ Treehouse Of Horror Teaser Has Arrived

This is a good reminder for anyone voting this year It’s October which means it’s Spooky Season! This year, though, Spooky Season encompasses not just ghosts and ghouls and Halloween, but also the really truly terrifying stuff. Like the fact we’re teetering on the edge of a complete dictatorship (with illegal, fake drop boxes and “poll watchers” we’re definitely making a steady descent), less than a month away from the election that will decide the future of democracy in this country — as ...

‘His Dark Materials’ Season 2 Trailer Should Satiate Your Thirst for Big Budget Fantasy

HBO has released the full trailer for His Dark Materials season 2, and it’s making me regret not carving out enough time to watch the first season when it was airing. Season 2 of the Philip Pullman adaptation looks even bigger, more thrilling, and more expensive than the impressive-looking first season – and of course, it also helps to have Andrew Scott (Fleabag) as a new cast member. Check out the latest trailer below. His Dark Materials Season 2 Trailer This season adapts the second bo...

32 Days of Halloween XIIIMovie Night #16 Well, here we are at the halfway mark of this thirteenth edition of 32 Days of Halloween. And at some point in each year’s proceedings, what just happened happens. I begin to think: “Maybe we’ve finally run out of movies. Voting with Optimism Amid a Pandemic

Friends! I wanted to talk to you about voting with optimism amid a pandemic. Why “optimism”? Well, as a cartoonist: 99% of my job is optimism. It’s hope! The whole point of comics is to give you a 3- or 4-second burst of joy, before you dive back in to the troubles of your day. Comics let us revel in the best moments in life: In Kindness. In Hope. In Friendship. Comics can’t move mountains, but they can move hearts. And as I’ve said in different comics over the years: O...

It’s the end of an era. Game of Thrones used the city of Belfast in Northern Ireland as its home base for all eight seasons of its run on HBO, and the expectation was that any prequel or spin-off shows would continue to shoot there. (Another prequel did film there, but that show wasn’t picked up.) But now Westeros will be created in another country altogether: according to a new report, the upcoming prequel series House of the Dragon will shift its home base away from Northern Ireland over to E...
