Favorite Media of 2020

For the 11th consecutive time (previously: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019), here’s my massive look-back at all my favorite things that I consumed over the past year. As always, this is limited to things that were released in 2020, and it’s of course HIGHLY subjective — this is not a round-up of the best media of 2020, but rather a look back at stuff I really enjoyed this past year, because I like the exercise of doing it. And that of course means there’s plen...

Watch ‘The Office’ Series Finale Unused Cold Open with ‘The Matrix’ Prank Played on Dwight

When The Office series finale aired back in 2013, it began with a little recap of what happened to the employees of Dunder-Mifflin in the year since the documentary camera crew stopped following them. But the last episode of NBC’s hit workplace sitcom almost went back to their cold open staple of a prank played on Dwight Schrute, and you can finally see it in its entirety. Originally teased in the cast’s table read for the series finale (a bonus feature that’s been available for some time), the...

This Week In Trailers: PG: Psycho Goreman, Acasa, My Home, Blown Away, Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week, we blow some glass, appreciate Bucharest, find ourselves with a new best friend from a dimension beyond our own, and find ourselves...

Operating notes: Straight Key Night

Straight Key Night (SKN) has come and gone again. This year’s was kind of fun. I managed to make six SKN contacts—three on Thursday evening on 80m and three on Friday morning on 40m—before I decided to call it quits. I used my KX-3 with a Bunnell Nr. 9 straight key (see above). The key has an old-style, 1/4-in. phone plug on it, while the KX-3 has an 1/8-in. jack, so I had to adapt somehow. I have an adapter, but the old-style phone plug didn’t really fit well, so I decided to just use a coupl...

Original Content podcast: ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ might be a beautiful mess, or maybe just a mess

“Wonder Woman 1984” was released on HBO Max on Christmas Day, where it quickly divided the hosts of the Original Content podcast. Perhaps it was predictable that Anthony — a fan of clunky-but-ambitious superhero sequels like “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” — enjoyed the film. Darrell, meanwhile, took the side of most critics, who found the movie exasperating and even, at times, mystifyingly bad. The biggest surprise was Jordan, who disliked the first “Wonder Woman” and a...
