What, are they  taking a break from slagging on Maduro? "People will think..." "What I tell them to think!": 5 notes on the ever eerily relevant Citizen Kane (1941)

1) Given its "classic" status, it is easy to forget that Orson Welles' Citizen Kane (1941) was made in a spirit of savage mockery of yellow journalism newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, a man whose media empire allowed him to guide mass public opinion as he pleased, even to the point of trying his durndest to destroy Citizen Kane. Who could we compare Kane to nowadays? A man who builds his career around lies? A man who, when he loses an election, turns to the headline "Fraud at polls!"...

Witzend #12 - Wally Wood, Steve Ditko art

Witzend #12Witzend v1 #12, 1982 - Employing plenty of zipatone screens and patterns, Wally Wood's "Lunar Tunes" is oddly humorous. Despite being one of his last works before his death in 1981, the artwork is rich and textural. Steve Ditko's one pager of a would-be burglar fits within the same genre and level of effort. Gray Morrow's single page illustration of the Phantom is also noteworthy. [Author: Ted Ignacio]

John Byrne Fantastic Four Special Edition v1 #1, 1984 - The bulk of the issue reprints the Jack Kirby classic from Fantastic Four annual #1. Umamusume Raising Guide: 101

As of this writing, we are about 12 days since the launch of the Umamusme Pretty Derby video game service. I probably won’t make many updates to this guide to keep up with changes, but I will fix any errors that I am made aware after the fact. For a very high level intro to the game, please see this post or this post. More translations and data can be found in this subreddit. Gamewith (reroll tierlist) seems to be the first spot to check JP-side updates. Gamewith’s raising guide is probably a...

Professional Troublemaker: The Fear-Fighter Manual in the Press!

This Week In Trailers: Voyagers, Sophie Jones, For Heaven’s Sake, Shiva Baby

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week, we take true crime a little less seriously, remember what it was like to be 16, wait longingly for our lover, get force-fed more dy...
