*PLANETARIUM PRIMORDIAL* Epochs & Frost Line Module Expansions

In our gameschooling adventures, we have found a few excellent astronomy themed games to add to our yearly rotation/unit study on space.  Planetarium gets pulled out much more often than just when we’re studying planets, but both the base game (read my review here) AND the Primordial expansion contribute so much interest, fun, and rabbit-hole […]

Billionaires: The Lives of the Rich and Powerful

Darryl Cunningham‘s latest is a well-done, depressing read. Billionaires: The Lives of the Rich and Powerful combines three brief biographies: the stories of Rupert Murdoch, the Koch Brothers, and Jeff Bezos, key players in our new gilded age. Cunningham wants to examine the changes the super-rich have made in our politics and our world, for the worse. Murdoch’s media empire started as an inheritance from a privileged background. He expanded from Australia into UK newspapers (made popular throug...

‘The Martian’ Considered Channing Tatum in the Lead Role Instead of Matt Damon

Ridley Scott’s acclaimed sci-fi film The Martian asked the big questions: What would it take for NASA to rescue an astronaut who got left behind on Mars? How would a man realistically survive on a barren planet given limited resources and a bunch of potatoes? And why can Aquaman control whales? But one big question might have changed the movie completely: what if Channing Tatum was cast in the lead role instead of Matt Damon? It sounds like a random hypothetical, but according to The Martian au...

The Secret Notebook of Sherlock Holmes

The Secret Notebook of Sherlock Holmes is short, silly fun. It’s got almost 30 stories in about 90 pages, and as you can see from the math, most are only two or three pages. Some involve Holmes being surprised or not exactly distinguishing himself in deduction, but the jokes around settings and details of life in his times are amusing. Guest stars include Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, and Irene Norton. Holmes solves mysteries involving the queen’s dogs, a missing ambassador, [...]

‘Sweet Tooth’ Featurette: Robert Downey Jr. Talks About Tweaking the Source Material for the Netflix Adaptation

Jeff Lemire‘s comic book series Sweet Tooth is getting the Netflix treatment as a streaming show, courtesy of executive producers Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey. In a new featurette, the two talk about altering the tone of Lemire’s comics from the “foreboding” vibe of the graphic novels to something that is much more family-friendly…which I’m guessing purists who love Lemire’s comics will not exactly be thrilled about.
