‘Big Bang Theory’ finale: The ‘underdogs’ go out on top

Let’s be honest. “The Big Bang Theory” was never a so-called “critical darling.” In fact, producer Chuck Lorre’s comedy about a group of nerdy scientists and their pals has had its legions of sneering haters. “Too broad,” they insist. Too “old-school” with its canned laughter and march-time gags. Once described by a witty tweeter as “the Nickelback of sitcoms,” “The Big Bang Theory,” which airs its series finale on May 16, never pops up in those “100 Greatest Shows of All Time” lists. And this w...

Future CW Shows Will No Longer Automatically Go to Netflix

As the streaming wars intensify, Netflix is finding itself at the center of everyone’s targets. In addition to losing Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars titles as Disney+ prepares to launch, and NBCUniversal preparing to pull streaming favorites The Office and Friends, Netflix is now losing out on future The CW shows. The teen-friendly network is ending its CW Netflix deal, which would find CW shows like Arrow, The Flash, Riverdale, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend landing automatically on Netflix soon after...

Is ‘Backdraft 2’ an Under-Baked Sequel or Hot Stuff?

(Welcome to DTV Descent, a series that explores the weird and wild world of direct-to-video sequels to theatrically released movies. This week’s descent sees us enter the unexpectedly light on fire sequel to 1991’s Ron Howard hit, Backdraft.) Ron Howard is often viewed as something of a journeyman director making crowd-pleasers across genres, but while his filmography certainly supports the idea, I’d argue he’s also delivered more than a few legit great films. Rush (2013) was his last high-poin...
