Entertainment industry treading water after 6 months of coronavirus restrictions

Entertainment happens in gathering places, which is what officials are trying to discourage to combat the novel coronavirus. When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in March, few people could have imagined a world without places to go for entertainment: no amusement parks, no multiplexes for movies, no theaters or festival grounds for concerts, no casinos. But not only did all those venues close, most haven’t reopened. And as we head into fall, no one knows when they will come back. They are part o...

‘Tenet’ Will Play at a Southern California Drive-In Despite Indoor Theaters Being Closed, Ignoring WB’s Previous Mandate

If you live in Los Angeles and have been itching to see Christopher Nolan‘s mind-bending new action thriller Tenet on the big screen in the safest possible way, we have good news. Starting tomorrow, Tenet will be playing at Mission Tiki, a drive-in located about 40 minutes outside of the city center. But the fact that it will be playing at that specific theater flies in the face of a Tenet drive-in mandate that Warner Bros. issued a few weeks ago. So what’s going on here? On August 24, word c...

How Fantasy Springs Resort Casino helped make an action movie during the coronavirus

When director Christian Sesma and producer Mike Hatton started working on their Coachella Valley-centric film “Pay Dirt,” Fantasy Springs Resort Casino turned out to be the perfect to play the film’s casino — so good that Sesma said he and Hatton would be back. The director and producer doubled down on the Indio area resort with their new film “Take Back,” but this time the casino went from a starring role to a big location behind-the-scenes. Fantasy Springs housed the cast and crew and hosted p...

Why AARP produced a documentary about 33-year-old comedian Jesus Trejo

Long Beach-born comedian Jesus Trejo likes to joke about his two “kids” on stage — except his are a little different than most. “I got two kids, ages 70 and 71,” he jokes during his set that’s part of a scene in the new documentary “Care to Laugh.” The film follows Trejo as he’s trying to make a name for himself as a comic while being the primary caretaker for his elderly parents, who both suffer from serious medical issues. “They followed my family and I for a year as I pursued stand-up and too...

Thoughts on Leadership: Change Takes Charge

Between virtual meetings and the whirlwind of everyday work, I’ve been revisiting the key insights from some of my favorite business books, “The Leadership Challenge” by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. Particularly applicable is the authors’ chapter on leading through change, and the importance of being proactive about changing course when challenges present themselves. They place emphasis on combatting challenge with change, and even purport that it’s a leader’s top priority to do so. This year ha...

“A drone is a camera,” Ani Acopian begins simply. “And it can fly. It’s basically a flying super-camera! After three seasons on Showtime, the storyline of the British-American horror drama “Penny Dreadful” had run its course. The series, which focused on 19th century Gothic fiction and characters like Count Dracula, Victor Frankenstein, Abraham Van Helsing and Dorian Gray, had been filmed in Ireland. When it came time to write a follow-up series, though, creator John Logan yanked the period series out of its Victoria-era London setting and reset it in Los Angeles circa 1938.
