The Ultimate Insider’s Guide to Hilton Head Golfing Paradise

Back in 1663, England-born Captain William Hilton began to survey a 42-square-mile island off the Carolina coast. Although the area had previously been visited by the Native American and Spanish explorers, it would eventually be dubbed Hilton Head, after this mariner. Later in its history, the barrier island would become home to more than 20 plantations. And it would go on to play a role in the Civil War. Union forces would occupy the land for several years. Even later, in the 1950s, lumber mil...

Genesis Invitational: McIlroy, Scott, Kuchar share lead after third round

PACIFIC PALISADES >> The good news for Rory McIlroy is that he made enough birdie putts during Saturday’s third round of the Genesis Invitational to pull into a three-way tie with Matt Kuchar and Adam Scott at the top of leaderboard at 10-under 203. The bad news for the world’s No. 1 ranked player is that if he had converted even half of the seemingly makeable birdie putts that he had throughout the round, he would have likely had a comfortable lead heading into Sunday’s final round. Early in hi...

Watch: Tiger Woods four-putts from 18 feet at Genesis Invitational

Tiger Woods did something Saturday he hadn't done on the PGA Tour in 22 years. He four-putted for the second time in the same season. Woods, who needed four putts on the first hole in Round 2 at Torrey Pines two weeks ago, hit his approach shot to 18 feet Saturday at Riviera's par-4 13th hole.

Inbee Park takes 3-stroke lead at Women's Australian Open

Seven-time major champion Inbee Park hasn't won an LPGA tournament in nearly two years, but her 19 tour victories include trophies at Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia. She might well be adding Australia soon to that total in the Asia-Pacific region. Park took a three-stroke lead at the Women's Australian Open on Saturday after a 5-under 68, including a 40-foot birdie putt on the 18th at Royal Adelaide.

McIlroy closes in on Kuchar, Woods lags at Riviera

Rory McIlroy, making his first start as world number one since 2015, pulled within two strokes of 36-hole leader Matt Kuchar Friday as Tiger Woods's hopes of a landmark Genesis Invitational win dwindled. Northern Ireland star McIlroy fired six birdies in a four-under par 67 at Riviera Country Club, to share second place on seven-under 135 with Americans Harold Varner and Wyndham Clark, who both signed for 68s. Kuchar, who started the day with a three-shot lead, posted a two-under 69 that pu...

A Golf Trip: The Joy of Planning

To paraphrase an old saying, the fun is in the journey not the destination. When you take a golf vacation to the home of golf, the fun is in both the destination and the journey. And before you get on the road there is the fun and discovery of planning the trip. If you’re a planner, like me, doing your research, making the bookings and negotiating with your partner (or partners) in crime is a big part of the fun… Continue Reading →

Playing on the opposite side of the leaders Sunday at the Genesis Invitational, Tiger Woods gave fans reason to cheer at Riviera's par-5 17th hole. After failing to escape the greenside bunker with his third shot, Woods stepped up again and delivered, holing his follow-up from the sand for his first birdie of the day. Woods had bogeyed three of his first seven holes before the hole-out birdie.

No golfer was happier to make the cut at the Genesis Invitational than Martin Trainer

Martin Trainer has a 9:29 a.m. PST tee time in the third round of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club on Saturday. If that doesn't seem like that big a deal, well you might not be familiar with the recent record of Martin Trainer. Having made the cut in three of his next five starts after the win (best showing a T-41 at the Players Championship), Trainer proceeded to either miss the cut or withdraw from 21 of his next 22 starts.

Inbee Park: A Swing to Copy

Inbee Park withstood the strong winds of Southern Australia to earn her 20th LPGA career win at the ISPA Handa Women’s Australian Open. Royal Adelaide Golf Club challenged the women on a day that tested their skills and mental toughness. Park out lasted all challengers on a day where only Cristie Kerr (69) was able to shoot in the 60’s and while her 74 was her highest of the week it still gave her a three shot margin of victory… Continue Reading →

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2020 Genesis Invitational

Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Matt Kuchar, the co-leaders of the Genesis Invitational at 10 under heading into Sunday's final round, have played in the tournament 27 times and made a collective $3.9 million, while missing the cut just twice. And yet the trio has recorded a surprisingly low seven top-10 finishes between them, Scott having won unofficially won the tournament in 2005 when they could only get in 36 holes, and a second-place showing in 2006. History then suggests that one of the ...

McIlroy, Scott, Kuchar share lead at Riviera; Woods falters

Rory McIlroy returned to No. 1 in the world for the first time in more than four years and is playing like he wants to stay there for a while. McIlroy had a 3-under 68 on Saturday at Riviera and shared the 54-hole lead with Matt Kuchar and Adam Scott going into the final round at the Genesis Invitational. Woods to skip first World Golf Championship of the year

Tiger Woods is among four players from the top 10 who are skipping the Mexico Championship next week, a World Golf Championships event with no cut and a $10.5 million purse. Woods, who tied for 10th last year at Chapultepec Golf Club but was never in serious contention, did not offer a reason and was vague when asked about his schedule this week. Brooks Koepka is skipping for the second time in three years, the first time by choice.

Putting woes wipe out Woods' slim hopes at Riviera

About the best thing Tiger Woods could say about his day at Riviera Country Club on Saturday was that it was over. Woods' tough day with the putter included a four-putt from 18 feet for double-bogey at the 13th -- his fourth hole of the day, and a three-putt bogey at his final hole, the ninth. "I didn't putt well today at all," said Woods, who took 33 putts.

You’ll never relate to a tour pro more than this nightmarish bunker meltdown at Riviera

Palmer found the front left bunker at Riviera's par-3 14th hole on Saturday, and boy, it seemed like he might never escape it. Take a look at the cringe-worthy Shotlink sequence on Palmer's scorecard, which would lead to an eventual nine on the one-shotter. Thankfully for the Texan, the PGA Tour did not share video of the nightmare sequence.
