Framingham cardiovascular risk prediction model from the 1990s still gives the best results

The so-called Framingham cardiovascular risk calculator was developed in 1991 on the basis of data gathered in the USA between 1968 and 1975. It is named after the town of the same name in Massachusetts, where a systematic evaluation of heart health had previously been conducted in the late 1940s.

I Think I’ve Been Dissociating for Over a Decade

I am not too sure if this is dissociation or maladaptive daydreaming so I have come to ask about my situation. I have been doing this since I was a child and I am now in my 20s- I would make up scenarios in my head with me in them and I do it all the time. It mostly distracts me from doing my schoolwork and staying present. I find that I also do this during times when I need to listen such as during lectures. When I am home in my room, I will often walk around and around my room while being in t...

My Mom and I Constantly Fight

My mom and I are always fighting. She is constantly telling me how to live my life and that any choices I make are wrong. She always constantly puts down my husband and says the nastiest, most vile things about him and I. I try to talk to her about it but it always ends with her and I yelling at each other and her telling me that I am being disrespectful to her. She has told me multiple times that she wishes she had a different daughter when all I ever try to do is compromise with her and try to...

Zinc can protect against oxidative stress when taken along with coffee, tea, and chocolate

Ageing and a low life expectancy are caused, at least partly, by oxidative stress. A team of researchers led by Prof. Dr. Ivana Ivanovi-Burmazovi from the Chair of Bioinorganic Chemistry at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), together with researchers from the USA, have discovered that zinc can activate an organic molecule, helping to protect against oxidative stress.

Birthday Wine Lunch

It’s becoming a tradition to make a trip to Charlottesville every year for my birthday.  We take the day off and have a kid-free day to relax and enjoy lunch and a vineyard trip. We started the day at Veritas, then went to Pippin Hill later in the day for lunch.     Pippin Hill has a top-notch restaurant and I love discovering what they are serving on their seasonal menus. September Mileage Update

USA-Reiseblogger / Pixabay September was an amazing month mileage wise.  So much so that I even went back and double checked the numbers.  This was a pretty big month, training wise.  Not only was I pushing towards Giant Acorn, but I also needed to get my mileage up for this weekend’s Army Ten Miler. I can’t say that I felt like I was putting in a lot of miles. I was just making sure to put in the time and get in my workouts.  Clearly those small things add up. September Totals: Swim – 8.3 mi...

Researchers identify a new cause of chronic stress in the brain

In an international collaboration between MedUni Vienna, Semmelweis University in Budapest, the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and Yale University in the USA, researchers have identified a new process in the brain that is responsible for the delayed stress response and the long-term effects of stress: with a delay of 10 minutes after the "danger", the area of the brain that reacts to stress and responsible for further action is activated via the cerebral fluid.

August Mileage Recap

USA-Reiseblogger / Pixabay A quick break from the vacation recaps (which are almost done!) for a mileage update. While I am absolutely looking forward to fall weather, I am sad that the summer is over.  Of course, the weather doesn’t seem to know that, as it’s supposed to be in the 90’s all week, but the school busses are out, I’m back to choir practice, and the months of “summer attire” at work (read: slightly less dressy) are over. August was an amazing month for me, with the Baltic cruise.  ...

Suicide Can Bring a Complicated Type of Grief

The path of grief is never a straight line. I got the call on a Wednesday evening from my husband. Earlier in the day, he had driven by a cliff where traffic had been stopped, with helicopters and fire engines on the scene. He had heard that a truck had gone over the cliff, but that’s all he knew. Later that day, he found out the truck had been driven by our friend. The place where it was driven off the cliff made it clear that it had been purposeful. The day before, I had heard news of Kate ...

Mid-Year Goals Check-In

USA-Reiseblogger / Pixabay So even though it’s well past mid-year, I thought I would go back and look at the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the year. I’ll be honest, I haven’t given them any thought.  Which is not how goals are supposed to work.  You’re supposed to set them and then work towards meeting them, not ignore them and hope things go okay.  However, 2018 went completely off the rails for me so it’s no surprise I wasn’t focused on my initial goals. Finish my 70.3 Well, th...

National Prayer Breakfast Organizer Doug Burleigh Predicted Putin and Trump Would Become Friends

With the indictment of Maria Butina for conspiracy and acting as an agent of the Russian government, public attention has come upon the Fellowship Foundation. Founded by the late Doug Coe, I crossed paths with the FF beginning in 2009 when Ugandan affiliates of that organization promoted the death penalty for GLB people in the Ugandan Parliament via the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. I took a strong stand against that bill which eventually led to an invitation to the National Prayer Breakfast, hosted ...

White Oak Lavender Farm

I heard about a lavender farm in Harrisonburg and immediately put it on my list to visit.  I emailed them earlier in May and they said mid-June would be peak time, so that’s when we went. We had a fun afternoon touring the farm and learning about growing, harvesting and distilling lavender. It was beautiful there, but I have to be honest, I was expecting more fields of color and it just wasn’t like that. More

Outer Banks Travel Guide

At the end of May, we took the kids on their first Outer Banks beach vacation. I came here as a child and have been here countless times so I couldn’t wait to introduce them to this special place. We had been holding out for more maturity, but decided we really wanted to go and they had been asking to go, so we decided to give it a try. More
