A pleasant surprise.

Finally got around to reading The Martian. This was a pleasant instance of the book being as good a book as the movie was a movie. Perhaps slightly better, as the the text version allowed more detailed descriptions of what exactly was happening; the movie had to dance a tightrope of expository dialogue versus just hoping the viewers picked up on what Watney was doing. It did it well, but the text is better. Quite a page-turner for as tech-heavy a piece as it is.Incidentally, this is another one ...

Broken screen?

Sadly, I dropped my Kobo Aura H2O from the height of a lounge chair. It fell onto the wooden leg of the chair. After the fall, the screen was frozen on the page I had been reading. Nothing looked amiss, until I started pushing the power button repeatedly. After that black vertical lines appeared on the right side of the screen. More frantic pushing of the screen and power button resulted in two blank boxes. The usual trouble shooting has not worked. The only odd thing I can see is a bit of a won...

ImageMagick for 2.5.8 DXG anyone?

Hello, Does anybody have ImageMagick binary for 2.5.8 DXG? My goal is to do e.g a (primitive) countdown clock on my jailbreaked DXG. Best case scenario would be to do it in javascript and Web Launcher, but WL does not seem to be supported for this old device. Plan B is to combine together 2 or more .png images with a script, and use EIPS for viewing them. In order to merge 2 .png files on the device i have so far tried: - python (failed to install PIL or Pillow modules for image ma...

Christmas List For The Knife Addict In Your Life, Knife Review Round Up

OpinionIdaho – -(AmmoLand.com)- As readers know, I love knives and get to test a bunch every year and do a lot of blade related seminars. So, I thought it’d be fun to make a “Christmas List For The Knife Addict In Your Life” article in case you’re having a tough time buying that particular person in your life a Christmas present this year.I’ve gotten to test a ton of knives this year so there’s no way that I can list all of the cool ones. But I’ll list out some of the special ones that caught my...

kindle paperwhite annotations export

I'm using my Paperwhite with Calibre and the majority of my ebooks are not purchased from Amazon but rather sideloaded through Calibre. At this point I have a very large amount of annotations. I have used the Calibre plugin to create a clippings file I can access, but I am wondering if there is any software utility out there that will give me more control over the notes in terms of selection and organization, so that it is easier for me to sort through them. For example, say I just want to exp...

Frankfurt airport: purchase Tolino eReader? (long shot question)

Kind of a long-shot, but maybe I'll get lucky... We are flying into Frankfurt airport in a couple weeks and then immediately driving to Poland to spend Christmas with friends. We originally thought we'd have a couple of days in Germany to do some shopping beforehand, so I had planned on finding a bookstore somewhere to purchase a Tolino eReader (which our friend's wife wants for Christmas - seems to be the best eReader for German libraries). So any chance someone here would know if I have a c...

Forma Standalone Forma setup?

I'm trying to do a standalone Forma setup as I've done with every previous Kobo I've owned, but it isn't working like it used to. Does anyone have any insight? There are some extra columns in the User Table in Sqlite... Every time I've tried it, the Forma comes up and says I've made a "Critical Error," and that I haven't synced any books yet. I can load an ePub via Calibre, but then it doesn't show up under My Books on the Forma... I'm essentially illiterate when it comes to understanding thes...

Gun-Control Fails in California… and We All Lose

Gun-Control Fails in California… and We All Lose U.S.A. -(Ammoland.com)- Sociologists and criminologists rendered their verdict. Gun-control in California doesn’t work. That should have been obvious in hindsight. Unfortunately, these failed laws will probably not be rescinded by lawmakers nor be overturned by judges. Since Californians won’t change things at the ballot box, they are going to have to vote with their feet to restore their rights. What we now know about gun-control- This recent r...

Revenues and customers can still be a hobby

For a few years, I have noted in update presentations and elsewhere that some gig drivers who only drive occasionally, do it for cash generation or to pass the time, or have other income sources, might really have an activity not engaged in for profit ("hobby"), rather than a business. The tax consequences of the hobby designation are tremendous in that no deductions are allowed starting in 2018. No self-employment tax is owed either, but loss of tax deductions for a gig driver is costly.  Follo...

6 Books That Will Get You in the Christmas Spirit

There are plenty of ways to get into the Christmas spirit. For those who enjoy reading, undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable is to pick up a Christmas-themed book! But where to start? This time of year, bookstore shelves are littered with cheesy holiday romances and chintzy gift/gag books that are merely taking advantage of the shopping season. To really get you in the mood for Christmas, pick up one (or more!) of these 6 books over the next few weeks.   A Christmas Carol by Charle...

Found an excellent Oasis cover

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I got this in red leather and just love it. It compliments the champagne gold. It has a small sticker that helps the magnet stay in place. Excellent Evergreens in the Enclosed Garden

Walking along the garden path in early December, I notice most of the world has fallen asleep. The last leaves have gone past and are ready to drop, the air gives a slight burning sensation to my lungs, and the hollow forest gives way to sightlines across the property. It would be true to say the world lacks the beauty it had even a couple of weeks before, but beauty once hidden in plain sight now sticks out, a diamond in the rough.     Longstalk Holly (Ilex pedunculosa) making its presence fel...

Seriousness Muse: Meditation Made Easy

Has anyone here tried Muse? My Muse-2 arrived on Monday and I've found it... interesting. I've tried various meditation techniques for years, and for one reason or another (mostly laziness) have drifted away. Perhaps Muse can help. Quote: Muse translates your mental activity into the guiding sounds of weather to help you find focused calm. Busy mind? Stormy weather. Calm mind? Peaceful weather.
