It already seems to be taken for granted that Bloomberg's gonna make a try for the Democrat nomination in 2020, but listening to De Blasio on Meet the Press this morning, I got a real "hat tossing in ring" vibe from him, too. Also, that guy has an ego that can be seen from orbit with the naked eye. . Robber Points Gun At Family Dollar Store Employees, Unaware Of Armed Customer Behind Him

The Blaze: A suspected robber is dead after allegedly trying to rob a Family Dollar in Dekalb County, Georgia, and ignoring the customer who was armed behind him during the altercation. The attempted robbery occurred on Tuesday morning when a man walked into the discount store and pointed a gun at two employees. While one employee was handing over money to the robber, a customer walked from the back of the store to the front, and witnessed the robber pointing his gun at the employee’s head. He t...

Likebook Mars battery life for e-book reading

Hello: Could you please comment on your current experience, that is, the Likebook Mars battery life for e-book reading? Any input is welcomed... as long as is based on experience, not hearsay or on-line literature. I'm seriously considering buying this device and the battery aspect of it (on airplane mode, of course, and using it mainly as an app enabled reader) is rather of consequence. Awaiting your kind reply, [INCANUS]

This book offers a look at several generations of LA’s coolest figures

Tosh Berman was one of the first people I met when I moved to Los Angeles. We worked together at Book Soup in West Hollywood and at one point we carpooled together from Silver Lake. Or rather, I drove us since Tosh didn’t drive. Tosh seemed like a character out of a play, with his slicked-back hair, librarian glasses, striped shirts, and socks that made a statement, back before we had considered that socks on adult men could make a statement. Tosh’s shotgun small talk felt more like dialogue, no...

Health Update

I meant to do this a while back, but I've been busy and not particularly motivated to write.  Because so many of my readers obviously are interested in my health - you guys overwhelmed me with your donations - I thought I'd let you know how things are going.I had my four month, 4,000 mile lube, oil change and tire rotation at Mayo earlier this month.  My A1C (90-day average blood sugar) was 4.2 - the minimum "normal" range - so I'm no longer diabetic.  My cholesterol, both good and bad, is excel...

Don't keep converted files?

Is there any way to tell Calibre to delete the converted version once it has been sent to a device? I've got lots of .epub files. When I send to a Kindle, they get automatically converted - that's fine, and they look great. But I don't want to keep the converted ones. I just want to keep the originals. I've checked the help file and the settings, but I'm not seeing anything that looks like it will do what I want. (I only want to keep the originals for disk space reasons - and so that I can ta...

Hasbro Announces Retro ‘Star Wars’ Action Figures Based on Classic Kenner Toys

The 2019 New York Toy Fair happened this weekend, and with it came tons of cool reveals of action figures, playsets and collectibles based on our favorite movies and TV shows. We have a larger round-up of the coolest toys from the convention on the way, but for now, we wanted to highlight an announcement that will make longtime Star Wars fans empty their wallet this spring. Hasbro announced the creation of a new line of retro Star Wars action figures based on the classic Kenner toys released wh...

Go watch "Alita", its pretty good

Saw it with my 10 year old. Its fun, nice movie for kids around that age, some neat action, lots of cyberpunk and the CGI is of course everywhere but somehow manages not to be over the top borrying like so many other recent films. Its bombing a bit and the rotten tomatoes review isnt fair at all. A solid 70%, maybe 80% if you like the genre.

Where are all the must-have Alexa skills?

Is it me or is Amazon's Alexa loaded with nothing but gimmicky skills? I like audio news streams as much as the next guy but where are all the amazing skills this platform should be offering by now? I wrote earlier about a use-case publishers and content consumers could get excited about but the capabilities I outlined then are still nowhere to be found. My various Alexa devices are great at streaming music. The Echo Show I got for Christmas sits on my nightstand and randomly shows photos from m...

I have tried calibre companion and for some reason it will not let me download it to my ipad, have tried to use the content server but I can't connect to it from my ipad browser. Any other suggestions I want to use overdrive as my reader but I am open to others if I can just get it to work.

Web Browser

Did something change in the last update(s) with the mobile browser? I’ve been reading some blogs on it which have an annoying side navigation column. Previously, when I first got the Aura ONE and Forma, I’d have to pinch zoom into the text, then shift left and right to center the text column. Yesterday, I accidentally scrubbed the zoom bar at the bottom and it automatically reflowed the body text and resized the font as I scrubbed. Now, there COULD have been a change to how the blog is formatti...

Kobo Original N416 SD Card Image

Hey all, I made a bit of a mistake trying to mount various parts of the mtdblock device on Linux and it wrote over the Linux RAM disk magic values here. I'm living in boot land with this: From 0x00080000 to 0x00280000 Target read size = 0x00200000 Booting image at 31000000 Bad Magic Number Is someone able to PM me the SD card image for this guy? If not, I'm downloading an ancient version of the Kobo Desktop application to see if it'll allow me to use the `loadu` command to perform the up...

Any workarounds for crashes / hangs in Pocket?

It seems like the Pocket app has significant trouble with long articles on my Aura One. For example, Wikipedia articles of any length will lead to 30s+ page turns and an eventual reboot. Pocket support was helpful, but eventually let me know that the app is written and maintained by Kobo and it’s pretty clearly an app specific issue. Kobo support was remarkably unhelpful, only ever responding with “it’s Pocket’s problem and we won’t do anything”. Are there any tweaks or workarounds for this? I ...

How it's going...

P robably just pics this coming week. And comments off. Big Stuff sucking Time. But I'm working on this one. I've posted about liquid applique before. Here, again, silk shibori by Glennis. I've many cloth stories to share about silk. But a new thought caught this morning. The process could be considered a form of kindness, not cutting a cloth to fit and leaving too tiny a scrap to be used. Keeping the cloth together and useful. I'm creating a mailing list for Patchwork i...

Re Edition of the HOPMI Chair by Gerrit Rietveld

The Hollandsche Patent Metaal Industrie or “HOPMI” was a manufacturer of several metal specialties. Parts for Bicycles for instance as locks. It also manufactured 2 HOPMI chairs designed by Gerrit Rietveld somewhere in 1932. One of the two was acquired by a Dutch Univereity professor, Prof. Lanjouw from Utrecht, whose heirs have given this chair on loan to the Central Museum of Utrecht in 2008. The Utrecht Central has the largest collection of Rietveld chairs. Then this chair was actually redi...

New York Times (Web) recipe only fetching three sections

When I set is_web_edition to False in the built-in NYT recipe, everything works fine. When I set is_web_edition to True, I only ever get three sections: Arts, Dining & Wine, Education. If I comment those sections out in the recipe (since I'm not interested in those areas), the download fails entirely. Does the recipe need updating for the web edition?

Automatically group and delete subscriptions?

I have a few news subscription sources sending daily updates to my Kindle Oasis via the email address. Is there any way (1) to have all those transmissions automatically grouped together on the Kindle (e.g., as periodicals, or in a "collection" on the device) and/or (2) to have old issues automatically deleted/archived? I've seen a few questions like this in the forum that suggest likely neither is possible, but the discussions I found are 7-8 years old, so I wanted to see if I was missing some...

Crazy AOC Is No Democrat Outlier

Opinion 2020 Democrats Radicals USA – -(Ammoland.com)- The main problem in American politics is not the obvious polarization but the underlying reasons for it. Partisanship, angst and divisiveness are all preferable to surrendering the culture and fundamentally transforming the republic. The Democratic Party has deceived much of the public into believing that its positions aren't extreme, but the truth is coming out now for all to see. Such veritable crackpots as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cort...

What is the pv72seasons hashtag about?

Did you know that ancient Japanese calendars split the year not into 4 seasons or even 12 – but into 72 seasons? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These micro seasons (each only 5 days) encourage us to notice the tiny, delicate changes in nature that constantly occur around us, year in year out.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A few years ago, I read about this and discovered the 72 Seasons app (it is available on iOs and android). It is beautifully made and enjoyable to follow along with the seasons of Japan. But it made me crave the knowle...
