Setting us up nicely for summer—or for the present moment if you happen to reside in a winter-less clime—a Varaschin Summer Set chair is comfy and commodious, strategically inhabiting terrain somewhere between an armchair and a full-on lounge. Manufacturer Varaschin spares no praise, readily characterizing Summer Set as “the most comfortable and generous item of the entire collection.” Indeed, Summer Set’s seat is as wide as outstretched arms. Its ergonomic approach of divided sectors for head...

On the Smugglers’ Radar

“On The Smugglers’ Radar” is a feature for books that have caught our eye: books we have heard of via other bloggers, directly from publishers, and/or from our regular incursions into the Amazon jungle. Thus, the Smugglers’ Radar was born. Because we want far more books than we can possibly buy or review (what else is new?), we thought we would make the Smugglers’ Radar into a weekly feature – so YOU can tell us which books you have on your radar as well! On Ana’s Radar: A new Greenglass...

The Case For The 20″-Barreled AR-15

American Rifleman: First, let’s look at the ballistics. The M16’s 20″ barrel has a 200-f.p.s. advantage over the 14.5″-barreled M4 when shooting M855 ammunition. In my testing, using Federal’s XM855 ammunition, a 20″ barrel recorded about a 150-f.p.s. advantage compared with a 16″ barrel, the common length for civilian carbines. For the carbine, that means about a 5 percent loss in velocity. The muzzle energy difference is about 125 ft.-lbs. or 10 percent. For reliability and durability data we ...

Sea Room ~ Adam Nicolson

'I have stolen some of the light which drenches you this midnight  to wish you all the islands in the world and every one a different kind of peace." These lines from Northern Lights by Jo Shapcott have been among my most treasured poetry quotes since the day I first read them and which I'd written on the flyleaf of Sea Room by Adam Nicolson. I've used the words so many times in so many books about islands, jotted them in notebooks, sent them as a sort of blessing to friends. I'm not sure w...

Mozilla Archive Format to ePub

Thought I'd put this here for anybody in the future looking for this. I had some short stories that I'd saved online in the now sadly-defunct Mozilla Archive Format. Rather than running an old version of Firefox (or Pale Moon with the MozArchiver), I decided to take a hand at converting one to ePub. It was pretty easy! Either you can rename the extension to .zip or use 7-Zip's file manager to crack it open. All the files are in there, under a subfolder. I was able to extract them all and just im...

Work Softly and Sit on a Comfy Sofa

Vitra’s Soft Work modular seating system definitely has a soft touch: you can see it in the cushy, comfy, yet sublimely svelte upholstery; in the inclusive way it incorporates a variety of working styles; and in its intuitive incorporation of power infrastructure and rotating tabletops. Soft Work—designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby—reverses the familiar formulation of the workspace: “Instead of creating a working environment centred around desks with peripheral sofas, Soft Work has develo...

Review | More Than We Can Tell by Brigid Kemmerer

My online book group does a Secret Santa exchange every year, and this last year mine knocked it out of the park. She sent me a copy of Brigid Kemmerer's  along with the most creative accompanying letter and series of clues and mementos tied to a fictional relationship not even wholly of this world. It tied in perfectly with the book and, once I read it, her creativity and extra mile effort meant that much more. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and immediately sought out the companion book feat...

Ballot measures: the new battle for gun rights

The next battle for gun rights won’t be fought in Congress or even in your state’s legislative body. No, the new fight is going to happen right at the ballot box, and if that doesn’t scare you it should. We’re talking about ballot measures. Ballot measures are a form of direct democracy, while they come … Continue reading "Ballot measures: the new battle for gun rights"
