E-Readers and Visual Fatigue, compared with iPad

I was exploring topic of visual fatigue and digital eye strain and found few quite interesting studies. How would you describe your personal experience with prolonged over five hours per day on daily basis reading on iPads vs ereader? My primary concern is inability to visualize in colour for ereader devices. And my primary concern for reading on iPads is visual fatigue. Although with proper brightness adjustment it seems to be greatly ameliorated. Please share your experience. Here is the...

Forma Is the Kobo Forma too buggy for the price?

I currently have a very old Kobo Glo which I’ve had for YEARS. The battery is finally starting to give out so I’ve been looking into a new ereader. I would like to stick with kobo. I purchase the Forma because I loved the large screen and the lightness when I held it in store. However when I got it home and used it, I found there was a bar of very bright light on the side with the buttons and the lighting was dim towards the buttons and got gradually lighter toward the edge. I ended up returni...

Thorough, informative and readable — Chris Bird packs a lot of useful information in this authoritative addition to any gun owner's bookshelf. U.S.A. – -(Ammoland.com)- “I have to admit that I find it a hoot that a Brit is reminding me of situational awareness, and how generally we should be armed 24/7,” Gun Owners of America’s Executive Director Emeritus Larry Pratt notes in the Foreword to an important book. “Well, Chris Bird is not a typical Brit, and he has a lot to teach us typical Yanks...

The Sabres of Paradise

Written by British travel writer Leslie Blanch, it's the history of a mid-19th century Islamic holy war against Russian imperialism in the Caucasus and was one of the sources for Frank Herbert's Dune. It's available for Kindle Unlimited. The L.A. Review of Books has a nice article about Dune's debt to it. https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/...tory-of-dune/#!

[Android] CC/Dropbox seems to be broken

Apparently Dropbox no longer supports the method CC has used for years to authenticate with Dropbox. Worse for me, they appear to have gone out of their way to break apps that use this now-unsupported method. And worse again, they don't provide an alternative. I am trying to find a fix, without success so far.

How to replace date with the published date

Disrupting and improving communication with machine learning

The topic of artificial intelligence (AI) is generating a lot of buzz these days and it's often difficult separating fact from fiction. For example, what are the most interesting AI applications today and where is the technology heading tomorrow? I recently started reading a good book on the topic called Prediction Machines, by Ajay Agrawal, Joshua Gans, and Avi Goldfarb. Prediction Machines offers a solid overview of AI fundamentals while also providing plenty of real-world examples. One of my ...

The Crafting of Chess / A YA GameLit novel

This is my first book. Having peeked on the other GameLit author, I wish I could say this was my twelfth. I'm trying to expand my social media presence, like many authors I'm more into reading and writing than being social. Mine is Young Adult GameLit. Smaller stakes, smaller action. No world domination plots here. The Crafting of Chess https://www.amazon.com/Crafting-Ches...fting+of+chess I'll try to answer any questions if you have them. :thanks: for any considerations.

Is there any way to kill the blinking cursor?

I have neurological issues, and blinking cursors blind me and trigger my migraines. I often have to be able to see what I've typed. Unfortunately, MacOS has no system-wide way to get rid of the blinding cursors, and the latest update seems to intensify the cursors. There are 3 defaults settings which can slow cursors as much as desired, but they only work in NSText applications. I switched to a flicker-free monitor, and it helps with some other triggers, but it is not enough to deal with the a...

Cool Reader Font Warning after update

No issues with Cool Reader for a few years, until I updated it last night. Now whenever I start the app, return from the Options settings, or switch between day/night, I get the following warning: “Font "Roboto" isn’t compatible with language “en-US”. Instead will be used fallback font.” Tried ALL the Cool Reader fonts with the same results. No difference between the CSS being enabled or not either. Has anyone got any ideas as to cause or solution? Using Android 4.2.2 on an Asus tablet.

N96 stuck with blue light on and Boox Reader on screen

Hi, I'm having trouble with my N96. When I turn it on, it remains stuck with the blue light on and with the screen showing Boox Reader. If I turn it off and connect the charger, the light first turns blue and then purple and the screen shows Boox Reader and it stays this way (with the purple light on and the screen showing Boox Reader) until I turn it off. Rebooting with fastboot leads to the same result (purple light on and Boox Reader on screen). Thanks in advance for your help.
