Great B movie

The Baytown Outlaws https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Baytown_Outlaws Anyone remember the movie called Raising Arizona? This movie is in the same class. Screw the reviews that call it trashy. This flick is a blast. The lead guy is same guy from season one of the Lethal Weapon television series playing his same rotten scoundrel with a hidden heart of gold. Eva Longoria and Billy Bob Thorton play very typical roles for themselves but that works for this movie. Forget fancy sets or high g...

How terrible (or not) is the relatively recent quick-highlight feature?

Asking mainly out of concern for how the “quick highlight” feature tends to litter the MyClippings.txt file with accidental or erroneous highlights. I use MyClippings a lot and I even have a script for processing it according to my needs. I don’t have quick-highlight on my PW2 yet. It’s still on older firmware. On my device, you have to tap on “Highlight” in the popup menu before your selection is highlighted and copied to MyClippings.txt. This is how I prefer it. But I’d like to update my firm...

All the Beautiful Lies by Peter Swanson

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.I needed to escape into an engrossing read this weekend to both take my mind off unalterable life circumstances as well as reintroduce myself to reading, something I seem to have stopped doing very frequently. There's a host of reasons for that I will probably discuss at some future distant time, but I am glad to say this weekend I was able to complete a whole book! Even though it was mostly a book read for the p...

Gaining momentum?

With Maine and New Hampshire having both passed Constitutional Carry laws, I thought it was pretty neat that a person could drive from the Bay of Fundy to Burlington, VT strapped and without need of a permit.Looking at a map posted by NJT the other day, it occurred to me that if either Nebraska or Iowa went to permitless carry, one could drive from Biloxi to Couer d'Alene without requiring a permission slip for your blaster. Kindle: Cover and title links in fly out TOC menu both point to the cover page

This is my workflow. I create the manuscript in word (office 365). I use heading styles to specify the chapter and sub chapters. I then use calibre to convert the book into an epub and add a title page to the TOC. to test out out it will look like in kindle for PC, I upload the epub to kdp and then download the resulting mobi file. I open the mobi file in kindle for PC. I click on the 3 lined hamburger icon in small tools pane in the left side of the screen to bring up the clickable TOC menu. I ...

Embracing the subscription economy

I'm about halfway through a terrific book called Subscribed, by Tien Tzuo. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in disrupting an existing business or creating a completely new one. The author was an early Salesforce employee and used to be their chief marketing officer as well as chief strategy officer, so he obviously knows a thing or two about subscription models. The overall premise covered in the book, where more customers are shifting from owning to renting products, isn't exactly ne...

Recommend online book discussion sites or apps

Q: Can anyone recommend some online book club/book discussion sites you are aware of, which ones you prefer, and why? Background In addition to the forums we have here on MR, I am looking to join an online book discussion group that is heavily moderated, allows for special-interest book discussion groups to form, and maybe one that has more advanced features (vs merely threaded BB discussions) to collaboratively comment and discuss ebooks. I might be willing to pay for a subscription-type s...

Aura H2O Calibre failed to load complete book onto reader

I just ran into a problem for the first time. I successfully downloaded a book onto Calibre. The book has 402 pages. I can open up and read the complete book in Calibre. The problem occurred when I transferred the book from Calibre onto my Kobo Aura H2o reader. Only the first 72 pages of the book transferred. I have completely removed and re-added the book. I have done a reboot of the reader. This is the first time this has happened. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

KOReader settings deleted on crash.

I've been having some crashing issues lately, and whenever KOReader crashes, it seems to delete the contents of the settings.reader.lua file. I don't really care if KOReader crashes or not, but I don't want to reset all my defaults/settings every time. Is this intended functionality? If so, is there any way to disable it? Sometimes it seems to delete book metadata as well, although it doesn't happen always and I can't seem to see any sort of pattern. If it is of any note, I've modified frontend...

Washington State Governor & Presidential Candidate Threatens Gun Dealers

Opinion Washington State Governor & Presidential Candidate Threatens Gun Dealers U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- Washington State Governor and Presidential hopeful Jay Inslee are sending threatening letters to gun dealers across the state. The Evergreen State recently passed some of the strongest gun control measures in the United States. This new law is known as Initiative 1639. one-color embroidery

I stitched this a couple of years ago for a book I contributed to, Embroider your Life, and I found it tucked away in my desk recently. It's stitched on a linen base and is a slipcover for a hardback sketchbook. So, it's reusable, which is nice. I forget how much I love one-color needlework, especially when I use different thicknesses of thread. This pencil was procured from the fabulous pencil shop in NYC, CW Pencil Enterprise. I am up to my ears in costume construction and altering fo...

Young Democrats are Throwing a Party, & the Grandparents Are Not Invited

Opinion Young Democrats are Throwing a Party, & the Grandparents Are Not Invited USA – -(AmmoLand.com)- Speaker Nancy Pelosi – and the old guard Democrats at large – are in a very difficult position. The radical young voters the Democrats have been courting for years have finally elected like-minded radical young representatives – and Pelosi and her leadership team has no control over them. A big reason why, as I mentioned on Hannity this week, is that there is a wide generational gap betwee...

5 powerful books by 5 powerful Southern California women writers

It’s a happy accident that the five books I’m looking forward to reading this spring are all by women, and an even happier one that this column coincides with Women’s History Month: The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker – San Diego hometown girl, UCLA alum, and New York Times bestselling author. In her previous novel, “The Age of Miracles,” Walker imagines a world where the days and nights are inexplicably growing longer while her young protagonist, Julia, is experiencing her own off-kilter expe...

Cool Reader - Still Broken
