Question about punctuation for German text

I am doing a multi-lingual book that has German verse (Struwwelpeter). Unfortunately, I myself am only monolingual. Please recommend the better choice for quotation marks: Should I use the guillemets (double-angle quotes) I find in the Gutenberg transcription, or should I use the curly lowered/raised quotes (don't know the proper name) I see in the pdf scan? And what might be the correct numeric entities to use in the html code? Is either one likely to have problems being supported in read...

Professional Shooter Uses ‘Gun Therapy’ To Lessen Symptoms Of Parkinson’s Disease

Fox News: David Smith had long been a competitive shooter, and he wasn’t going to allow a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease to end his hobby. The 46-year-old, now considered by Guns.com a “powerhouse on the competitive circuit,” and who just scored a spot at the 2019 World Rifle Shoot in Sweden, was first diagnosed with the crippling nervous system disorder eight years ago. But rather than shrinking away, Smith confronted Parkinson’s head-on and developed what he calls “gun therapy” as a means t...

Concealed Carry Corner: Should You Take a CQB Course?

Shoot houses and Close Quarter Battle (CQB) courses are often accompanied by misconceptions. People are confused with what the courses are about and who they are intended for. They assume the information will not apply to them if they are not law enforcement or military. Others see civilians that attend CQB courses as just wanting […] Read More … The post Concealed Carry Corner: Should You Take a CQB Course? appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

Does using Calibre Collections to install new fonts on legacy kindles?

I just got a Kindle 4 NT (used to have one and traded it in, regretted it, so got a cheap one on Woot). I'm really enjoying reading on it, but was trying to add the Bookerly font to it, and, when that didn't work, the Bitter font. I followed the procedures as found here on MobileRead and have had a frustrating time. The margins have been altered successfully using Calibre Collections, as has the line spacing. But, each time, when I go to the alt typeface on the kindle, it is just the same! I'v...

How Many Springs?

How many springs have passed  since she watched the first green shoots break from the earth,  the bright blooms unfurl? The year they raised the little cabin she planted a h andful of the precious bulbs,  a neighbor's sharing. Pushing aside the fallen, crisping leaves, she buried the papery bulbs in sure and certain hope of making a home, a family, of putting her mark on the land. Here I am and here I mean to stay each buried bulb declared. ...

Wait, what?

"Over recent decades, the size of bullets fired by the typical handgun has increased."[citation needed]"Police seizures of guns in other cities, including Chicago, also show a growing share of large-caliber handguns."Even as the .40's share of the new gun market dwindles, the used gun market is awash in .40-caliber department trade-ins. When a poor person needs a cheap gun for home defense, a $299 ex-police Glock 22 is a compelling purchase. Improperly secured guns stolen from family members are...

Rules of Engagement

There's an article up at SI right now to which I feel the need to offer a counterpoint. It opens thusly:"Precious few of the tactical-training courses I’ve taken devoted any amount of time to the art of stealth while defending the home. That’s mostly because being quiet and hiding doesn’t do much for participants who paid to shoot hundreds of rounds downrange while moving, reloading, diving for cover and yelling “Clear!” as they pie a room and take out a cardboard army of bad guys (not that there...

Countering the “Civil Society” Argument Against Semiauto Firearms

Opinion In the words of Kamala Harris, “there is no reason in a civil society” for people to have modern multi-purpose semi-automatic firearms. United States – -(AmmoLand.com)- One of the more recent arguments being used against modern multi-purpose semi-automatic rifles (and shotguns, for that matter) is that they have no place in “civil society.” It’s a far cry from their earlier justifications for the arbitrary bans on these semi-automatic firearms. One big reason is that they have found ...

Downsampling of images in ZIP to ePub conversion

I noticed that PNG images are downsized in the conversion process from ZIP file to ePub file in Calibre. I’ve searched for a setting in Calibre to avoid this resizing, but could not find it. Any idea how I can keep the original pixel sizes from the images?

And then she said

I don’t know if all of you know this, but the comments on blog posts (at least here) are, generally speaking- better than the post itself.  I don’t know how it happened, but there’s a lot of cleverness and entertainment going on in there. Over the years, I’ve come to believe that if one person types it, at least 20 people were thinking it, so let’s see what’s happening down there, shall we? Elizabeth wrote: I confess that even though I teach stranded knitting, I’ve never knitted a pair of strand...
