How Cerberus Drove Remington Out Of Business

New York Times: By choosing to place Remington in a Southern state, Press was acknowledging how much the gun business had transformed. Historically, gun makers operated in the North, in New England’s “Gun Valley” or, like Remington, in upstate New York. Smith & Wesson and Colt were established in the 1850s by businessmen in Massachusetts and Connecticut, respectively. During the Civil War, arsenals in Massachusetts furnished huge quantities of firearms to the Union Army. But social mores had cha...

Bullet Tractability And Barrel Twist Rate

Wirecutter has this video up on barrel twist rate.  Go to his place to see it. I don’t think the author of the video understands the basic concept and what’s going on here.  This is a screen shot of the video I linked on barrel twist rate. Bullet tractability is the degree to which the nose of the bullet follows the trajectory.  In the screen shot above, it doesn’t.  This can indeed happen if the bullet is overstabilized, something we concluded in our assessment of this. In the video (screen sh...

Porch Gardening and Tomato Futures

After last year's disappointing (to us, not the deer) garden, we've been considering or options. And have not yet planted anything down in the real garden. Corn, cucumbers, herbs, and cole crops were some of the few things the critters didn't mess with so we'll probably make a start soon -- as soon as the garden dries out enough to till. Meanwhile, I'm making a modest start on the porch - two Cherokee Purple and one cherry type tomatoes down there at the end along with Rosemary, Dill...

Loonshots, by Safi Bahcall

Several smart people I follow have talked about reading a book called Loonshots, by Safi Bahcall, so I figured I better have a look. It's a great read that's loaded with interesting stories and provocative perspectives. I still have about 60 pages to go but I've already learned about how radar was almost completely overlooked as a breakthrough technology, why Pan Am is no more and how Polaroid met its demise. You might think you already know most, if not all, of these stories but I promise you t...

Her Birth ~ Rebecca Goss

Reading the new collection Girl by Rebecca Goss (my thoughts coming up later this week) has taken me back to the first collection 'Her Birth' which wowed me back in 2013.  I was just going to link to it, then I thought I'd just pull out an extract, but in the end I've almost made myself cry remembering how moved I was by this book, so with no apology, here's the whole lot; here are my thoughts from five years ago.. 'In 2007 Rebecca Goss’s newborn daughter Ella was diagnosed with Severe Ebstei...

POTD: Old School New Zealand SAS

This vintage photo of New Zealand SAS operators has been doing the rounds on social media lately. It features a pair of operators armed with MP5s. New Zealand’s SAS was established in 1955 but their counter-terrorism element was only established in the 1970s. The photos are annotated with a 1980 date and the operator on […] Read More … The post POTD: Old School New Zealand SAS appeared first on The Firearm Blog.

Can we speed up the selection speed of a word?

Hi, I realized today that the selection speed of a word is a bit slow in my opinion. Can we in any way increase the speed of selection like double? Thanks in advance

Well. That's unexpected.

I haven't been writing much (at all) lately. I just can't commit to getting stuff done. Anyway, I thought I'd weed out items that were obviously never going to get anywhere. Disaster. I read them for the first time since...2018, and discovered I really liked them. In all their "work in progress/weirdly disjointed" glory. One I started in 2006. Which is just ridiculous. But, I just can't delete them. And there are about eight (if I count an episodic 'growing like Topsy' mega-thing as one sto...

Internal Service Error

I have a copy of Calibre Companion purchased from the Amazon app store back in 2012. It's been serving me well since then but I'm having an issue with it now. For some reason, I'm constantly getting an Internal Service Error message every time I open the application. It says that there could be a problem with my phones network connection but, I'm purposely posting this from my phone to show that there's no problem there. I've tried running CC while connected to both Wi-Fi and cellular networks w...

Tools to test pdf compatibility and speed?

I variously use k2opt with -mode copy and -dev dx and Ghostscript with -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 to pre-process pdfs for my Kindle Dx. I sometimes use k2opt with -mode copy and sometimes -dev dx and then OCRmypdf with -f --output-type pdfa-1 to find readable text on pdfs without it or with corrupt text. I occasionally use PDF to EPUB+, but it can screw up formatting, and it is a hassle if I need to cite page numbers. I used to use Ghostscript with more aggressive options, but it would lose pages....

Television - Live from El Club, Detroit

I managed to see one of my all-time favorite bands last night, Television, live at El Club in Detroit. It's not a venue I've been to before and despite a few ominous comments on Yelp, it's a fine club in a fine neighborhood. I had no problem finding street parking, partly because I was ridiculously early. At any rate, the staff are nice and there's an outdoor patio as well as the bar indoors. El Club doesn't have much in the way of seating, just two booths way at the back, b...

Why I'm not allowed to Private Messages??

Hello! I know there are some threads similar to this but I still can't get an explanation for this problem. I'm very new at MR but I've already my account activated and I've done some posts. I'm really enjoying the place, but for some reason I'm not able to Private Message, I'm looking in my Edit Options to activate them but there's simple no option to do it. Same thing for the signature, when I tried to edit it it just says that I don't have the privilege to do it. Please does anybody know w...

Gov. Bullock VETOs MT’s Preemption Fix Law, Leaving a Patchwork Of Gun Control

Opinion Gov. Bullock VETOs Mt's Preemption Fix Law, Leaving a Patchwork Of Gun Control Laws Montana – -(AmmoLand.com)- Friday, 5/3/19, Governor Bullock vetoed HB 325, the bill to prevent a patchwork of gun control laws across the state. The bill's identical companion, HB 357 will cause the same thing to go to a vote of the people at the next General Election, in November of 2020. It's no surprise that the Governor was highly disingenuous in his veto message giving his reason for this veto. F...

What “Unsigning” the Arms Trade Treaty Means for American Gun Owners ~ VIDEO

Opinion Fairfax, VA – -(Ammoland.com)- Last Friday, President Trump took the historic step of ordering the “unsigning” of the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty during his address to the NRA-ILA’s Leadership Forum. President Trump’s action effectively withdraws the United States from the most comprehensive effort towards international gun control. Much of the intervening coverage on the ATT has focused on how the treaty did or did not constrain U.S. arms sales abroad, but many average law-abidi...

5 Tips To Overcome Creative Block

There was a time I had to take a break from blogging. I loved blogging and thought it was going to be so easy to start again. I thought I’d have a list of ideas to get right back into it. Even though I wanted to, my mind was stuttering. Thoughts went through my mind. How do I think of a post to start with? How do I get organized again? When the pictures for me to paint seemed to flow, it seemed as though nothing fit quite right enough to add words to them. Creative block is real. It can show ...

Did Moby sexually assault Donald Trump? Moby does confess to "knob-touching" Donald Trump.

From Moby's new book, "Then It Fell Apart," the second volume of his memoir. The scene is a party in New York City. It's 2001, after 9/11 (and Moby characterized himself as "traumatized" and not knowing "how to process my sorrow"). Moby describes himself as "well on my way to getting drunk," because he'd had "three glasses of champagne, three glasses of red wine with dinner, a shot of vodka before dessert, and an Armagnac digestif." “Dale,” I said, once we had ordered drinks, “tell Clarice about...

iPad Old Ipad Charging Fix

I had taken my old Ipad (first generation) to the shop to get fixed because it wouldn't charge. I was informed it was because the charging port would need to be replaced. I put it in a drawer about a year ago and on a whim today I watched some youtube videos re Ipad charging problems which advised to clean the charging port with a toothbrush/ toothpick. Another video also recommended doing a soft reset due to software problems sometime not allowing an Ipad to charge. Now the Ipad is chargin...
