So, my 40-year old house has a leak in the water line IN the foundation.  This is a masonry home, and the drywall is laid directly on the masonry walls, I believe, which means re-piping the house is going to be messy.  And expensive.Dammit.Sometimes adulting sucks. Remembering my Mum...

It would have been my Mum Vera's 93rd birthday today, same age as the Queen, though she died twenty-two years ago. And then I think of Hilary Mantel's pearl of wisdom that in a sense you are not dead if someone still talks about you. Now I know not everyone might have had as happy-an experience with their mum as I did as a child, but I thought it might be nice for anyone who wanted to to add a comment about their own mum, or a recollection of a good memory you have of them because I would love ...

Smith & Wesson Performance Center Shield EZ 380 – Review

S&W Performance Center Shield EZ 380 by Graham Baates U.S.A. – -(Ammoland.com)- Before we understand the Performance Center Shield EZ it's necessary to look at the base model.  The Shield EZ .380 is the pistol many wanted but few asked for.  They didn't ask because either they didn't know they wanted it or because their voice was drowned out by the mainstream of the industry.  A pistol that is incredibly easy to rack, easy to load, and easy to shoot.  The intent wasn't to make the latest and ...

I read the following piece of news in the Spanish newspaper “La Vanguardia”. “What is truth? The President of the Court, Josep Maria Pijuan, had to check which of the versions of rape offered by the girl victim, 11-year-old J., was closest to reality. The lawyers attending the questioning did not believe that she would […]

Waging a Full-Spectrum Fight for the Second Amendment

Wayne LaPierre United States – -(AmmoLand.com)- When we are discussing the present situation, to include how to defeat the long game being used by anti-Second Amendment extremists, one big thing we need to do is to understand that the fight has shifted. We’re no longer just fighting the normal battle on political and legislative fronts. The fight has now expanded to cultural outlets, corporate boardrooms, Silicon Valley censorship, and social stigmatization. It is now a full-spectrum fight. T...

How ‘Norco ’80’ author Peter Houlahan tracked down the true story of a deadly Southern California bank heist and shootout

Peter Houlahan remembers picking up the newspaper one morning in May 1980. A bold headline told of a band of five bank robbers hitting a Security Pacific branch in Norco and raining hundreds of bullets down on the first deputies on the scene before leading dozens more law enforcement officers on a violent chase and rolling gunfight through two counties and up the backside of Mount Baldy. “On the front page was that photo that has highway patrolmen Bill Crowe and Doug Earnest — Crowe has been sho...

White woman pulls gun on black couple at campsite: "you don't belong here"

Army National Guard Sergeant Franklin Richardson and his wife, Jessica, took their dog to Oktibbeha County Lake in Mississippi to enjoy a picnic by the water. As soon as they arrived, a woman in a Kampgrounds of America shirt pulled a gun on them, said she was the manager, told the couple they didn't belong, and that they didn't have a reservation. Then she said "Get! Get!" as if shooing away animals. Buzzfeed: “Time stopped. Everything stopped. I was confused as to what was going on. It’s not l...

Boox Note: defective notetaking on the right hand side?

Hello everyone, I have just received a Onyx Boox Note 10.3" (the only one available on amazon in Canada) that I bought to anotate PDF scientific articles. However, my Boox Note seems to have a problem: notetaking is defective on a ~0.5cm band on the right hand side of the screen, which is a consistent issue for my use-case. I have seen someone with a similar issue in amazon comments, for those of you who own this device I would like to know if you have the same issue before I return the device...

DIY Dinosaur Nest – Inspired by Disney’s Gigantosaurus

Did you know International Dino Day is June 1st? All of my kids have gone through a dinosaur phase and it’s always so much fun! From learning how to say all those long dinosaur names to setting up elaborate play scenes with a dinosaur nest and our dinosaur toys in the backyard, there is always so much wondering, learning and imagining that surrounds dinosaurs. We recently checked out a few episodes of Gigantosaurus on Disney Channel, and my preschooler loved the adorable young dinos and the myst...

10 Quotes on the Christian Life from John Stott

Nearly 50 years ago, the evangelical church was on the brink of shirking the call to global missions. As framer of the Lausanne Covenant in 1974, John R. W. Stott (1921–2011), an Anglican priest, was on the forefront of the movement to preserve modern missions endeavors. He founded the Langham Partnership to equip churches with biblical resources and training for global missions. While the Lausanne Covenant may have been Stott’s most significant contribution to modern Christianity, it ...

Read to Your Kids While They're in the Bathtub

There’s really no bad time or place to read to a child (okay, maybe while scuba diving or getting a root canal, but you know what I mean). Still, when my daughter was younger, one of the greatest story time setups involved sticking her in the bathtub, grabbing a stack of books and plopping myself on the covered toilet…Read more...

MoMA Rooftop Garden by Ken Smith – Crime of the Century?

Rooftop Garden, MOMA Location: New York,NY Architect: Ken Smith Landscape Architects. If this blog had only launched a couple of years earlier, you’d better believe we’d have ranted about the all-fake “garden” on part of the Museum of Modern Art’s roof by the famous designer Ken Smith, who teaches at the Harvard Design School. I recently learned about the “garden” from my landscape architecture professor. This was Smith’s second scheme for the roof, after his first was rejected. He told the N...

It's the Little Things

I think that this tiny beauty is a Silvery Blue --  I've seen them around for years and never managed to photograph one. The topside of their wings is quite blue -- unfortunately, they flitter around very quickly and when they do alight, their wings are folded, showing the pretty silvery-blue underside. Also, they stay close to the ground -- and it's not easy for me to get down to that level quickly. By the time I do, the fickle thing has moved on.  Plus, t...

Possible to sync reading position between Calibre & Koreader?

I've been using a Kobo H2O for a while now with the default reading app, and the KoboUtilities plugin in calibre would backup my reading progress every time I plugged it in so I could restore it if anything ever happened to cause it to be lost (like database corruption, or that annoying microSD bug a while back). Anyway H2O screen is ruined, plan to switch to a Boyue Likebook Mars and use Koreader as my main reading app, wondering if there is an easy way to export the saved reading progress fro...
